I'm not able to make it to any wrestling this weekend, but Richland did let me know that the results of their Thomas Buick GMC tournament are online here.
Cambria Heights leads the team race after one day with 58.5 points, but has just a one-point edge over second-place Somerset. Donegal (56), United (54), Central (51) and Central Cambria (50) are all within 8.5 points going into Saturday's semifinal round.
The brackets show four seeded wrestlers at each weight, and a number of those went down on Friday night. Whether or not they were all "upsets" is open to debate, as a lot of them seemed to have piled up nice records against weak competition.
The biggest upset, according to seeds, came at 126, where top-seeded Kody Ofsanko of Conemaugh Township lost 7-0 to Central York's Sam Butler in the quarterfinals. Butler's reward, however, is getting Joe Davis, who likely would have been the top seed if he had wrestled more than three matches entering the tournament.
Glendale had quite a few wrestlers with good records coming in, but two of the Vikings' second seeds lost on Friday night. Bradon Hughes, who is No. 2 at 132, lost 16-9 to Tyrone's Aleic Hunter while Somerset's Austin Hemminger beat No. 4 Bryce Biddle of Central 11-3 at the same weight. The Vikings other second seed go down came at 220, where Raymond Carlheim was pinned by Ridgway's Colton McClain.
Greater Johnstown's Richard White, who is listed at 9-2 on the bracket (though his NWCA page had him at 1-3) and was the second seed at 160, was beaten 8-1 by Ridgway's Michael Popson in the first round. Blairsville's Tyler Lenhardt pinned third-seeded Bryce Thompson of Central Cambria at the same weight.
Cambria Heights' Michael Dautlick beat third-seeded Aaron Griffith of Conemaugh Township at 113.
Central's Blake Burkett lost 8-6 at 170 to United's Anthony Michaels, who was then pinned by Cambria Heights' Dalton Waksmunski.
Forest Hills' James Nevins might be the biggest surprise in the semifinals. The 182-pounder entered the tournament with a 2-9 record, but a first-round bye and a 7-3 victory over fourth-seeded Hunter Hamilton has him in contention for a medal.
