All the info you need on the Southwest Regional tournament

I spent six hours today working on a predictions column on www.tribdem.com.
I tried to look at results for each of the wrestlers and balance that out with past performances by individuals and teams. I also took my personal experiences into account, so it probably skews more heavily toward the guys I saw on a regular basis. Oh, and after going pretty close to the seedings in the lower weights, I probably got a little too crazy in terms of upsets in the upper weights.
I didn't do projections for a team champion, but I did a little calculating for the blog and came up with the following:
  • Berlin Brothersvalley and Chestnut Ridge each have six state qualifiers according to my projections (that's when realized I might have leaned too heavily on guys that I saw in person).
  • Derry, Jefferson-Morgan, South Fayette and Westmont Hilltop each have four qualifiers.
  • Jefferson-Morgan led the way with three finalists.
  • Only one team had two champions and that team probably won't figure into the team race.
Mark Dugan of Off the Mat made picks which appear alongside mine in The Tribune-Democrat. Joe Tuscano of the (Washington) Observer-Reporter picks the top three finishers at each weight on his blog. Ryan Spring said on his blog that he will have picks in Friday's Bedford Gazette, and I assume that Todd Irwin will have picks in the Altoona Mirror.

One the line(s): In case you haven't seen the brackets yet (where have you been?) here's a link to them.
  ---
Live updates and chat: I plan to do a live chat similar to what I did last week for the District 5 tournament on The Tribune-Democrat website for both days of the regional tournament. Even if  you can get the live results elsewhere, I'd appreciate it if you can stop by and say hi, as the hits on our website help others at the newspaper see how important the wrestling community is to our coverage.
---
The schedule: Here's the schedule that the media was given:
Friday
  • 4: 15 p.m. Doors open to public
  • 5 p.m. Opening round on five mats
  • 7:30 p.m. Quarterfinals on three mats; consolations on two mats
Saturday
  • 9:15 a.m. Doors open to public
  • 10 a.m. Second-round consolations on five  mats
  • 11:30 a.m. Semifinals and third-round consolations on five mats
  • 1:30 p.m. Fourth-round consolations on five mats
  • 4:45 p.m. Parade of champions
  • 5 p.m. Consolation finals and finals on three mats
It doesn't say as much, but I'd assume that the gym will be emptied after the fourth-round consolations.
Ticket prices are $3 for students for first and second sessions and $4 for finals; adults are $4 for first and second sessions and $6 for finals. All-session passes are available, although there is no discount, so it's $10 for students and $20 for adults.

Wrestling is done for the evening. Here are the results. Wrestling resumes at 9:30 Saturday morning with the semifinals and consolations. The consi finals are at 5 with the finals to follow.
I don't have a good chat option that I can use on here, so I'll be using the one on The Tribune-Democrat. Just click on the link and it should take you there.

District 5 brackets, updated with Knotes

The District 5 brackets are out here http://liveresults.escapesports.com/PIAA/2015-PIAA-District-V_AA.html

A few Knotes:
  • Chestnut Ridge has exactly half of the top seeds in the tournament – Aaron Burkett (106), Dylan Wiliams (113), Justin McCoy (120), Derrick Claar (138), Trent Crouse (152), Conner Buttry (195), Shane Davis (285). The other 11 teams in the district have seven combined.
  • If the seeds hold, Chestnut Ridge will advance 10 of 14 wrestlers, with Morgan Deremer (second at 132), Colby Hillegass (second at 160) and Luke Hobson (third at 126).
  • Berlin Brothersvalley has three of the non-Ridge top seeds – Joe Swank (132), Bryce Fochtman (160) and Taylor Cahill (170) – which isn't a surprise. Meyersdale also has three – Brady McKenzie (145), Chris Hutzell (182) and Ty Smith (220) – which is a surprise, to me, at least.
  • The Mountaineers would advance eight wrestlers if the seeds hold, with Storm McDonald (second at 182), Toby Cahill (second at 195), Shane Pepper (second at 220), Anthony Collins (second at 285) and Kane McKenzie (third at 138) as the other one.
  • The Red Raiders don't have any wrestlers other than their three top seeds projected to advance to Canonsburg.
  • Bedford is the only other team other than Chestnut Ridge, Berlin or Meyersdale with a top seed (Jon Gabriel). Daniel Brett would be the only other Bison advancing, if the seeds hold true.
  • Despite only having Tevin Mostoller (second at 145) ranked in the top two, North Star would have six wrestlers advancing if the seeds hold. Seeded third in their respective weights are Keaton Furry (106), Gus Strasiser (152), Dillion Charlton (160), Jon Thomas (182) and Hunter Connor (195).
  • Northern Bedford would have five wrestlers advance if the seeds hold true – second seeds Zach Clark (113), Jared Helsley (126), Carter Replogle (138) and Lucas Kolinchak (170) and third-seeded Trey Childers (120).
  • Somerset has just four in a position to advance – Quinn Cole (second at 120), Jon Fabian (second at 152), Austin Hemminger (third at 145), Logan Eller (third at 220). Interestingly, Fabian is up a weight class after wrestling all but one match at 145 all year. Hemminger, who spent most of the season at 152, is now down to 145. And Nate Zanoni, who started at heavyweight for most of the season, is out with an injury.
  • Everett has two wrestlers projected to advance – Liam Flaherty (third at 113) and Ben Stover (third at 132).
  • Tussey Mountain – Oaklee Brode (second at at 106) –  and HOPE For Hyndman – Brandon Griese (third at 285) – each have one.
  • Conemaugh Township and Shade are projected to get shut out of regionals.
