I know I don't get to do much summer coverage, but I did want to point out that I had a story in The Tribune-Democrat that will interest a lot of my readers.
Taylor Cahill, who was a state qualifier last season as a sophomore for Conemaugh Township, and his younger brother, Toby, who will be a freshman this season after finishing second in PJWs in March, have moved into the Berlin Brothersvalley School District. While neither Conemaugh Township nor District 5 would comment directly on the case, it sounds as though the CT administration is refusing to sign off on the move. The Cahills' father, Steve, says he moved to Berlin for a shorter commute to Cumberland, Md., where he works a few days a week.
The other side of the coin is that there had been rumblings for a few years that the Cahills were considering a move to Berlin. Until last month, that's all it was - a rumor.
There's already talk that, if eligible, the Cahills' transfer could shift the balance of power in District 5 from Bedford County to Somerset County. I'm not sure about that, as Chestnut Ridge should still be loaded, but a lineup that features young talent like the Cahills, Bryce and Braden Fochtman and Joey Swank certainly would be a formidable one.
Assuming that Conemaugh Township is protesting the move, which Berlin's principle seemed to confirm in my article, and the Davidsville administrators don't change their mind beforehand, a hearing will be heard on Aug. 6 to determine the Cahills' eligibility. If they win, they're immediately eligible for any sports (they also play football). If they lose, they can still appeal the decision to the PIAA.
There will be plenty of interest in the District 5 Committee meeting if it gets to that stage.
I'll try to keep everyone updated on the progress of this situation.
