Both of the better seeds advance, as No. 3 Berlin Brothersvalley beat No. 6 Northern Bedford 52-12 and No. 4 Somerset beat No. 5 North Star 38-29.

106-No match.
113-Quinn Cole, S, pinned Eric Colangelo, 1:21.
120-Colton Gennett, NS, tech. fall Kat Luteri, 15-0.
126-Garret Foster, S, pinned Brady Gardner, 5:19.
132-Austin Hemminger, S, pinned Michael Baker, 2:25.
138-Jon Fabian, S, tech. fall Kyle Supanick, 15-0.
145-Sheldon Wagner, S, dec. Tevin Mostoller, 8-7.
152-Corey Fritch, NS, pinned Baile Phillips, 3:44.
160-Mike Laue, S, dec. Gus Strasiser, 4-3.
170-Landon Lohr, S, pinned Mason Jamieson, 1:51.
182-Dillion Charlton, NS, pinned Casey Pyle, :54.
195-Logan Eller, S, dec. Thomas Miller, 5-0.
220-Hunter Connor, NS, pinned Jack Hause, 3:49.
Records: Somerset 7-2; North Star 8-5.

Analysis: Two results that surprised me a bit made a huge difference in the dual, which I probably would have picked North Star to win.
Sheldon Wagner's 8-7 victory over Tevin Mostoller was huge at 145. Not only was it an unexpected result, at least in my opinion, but it's always demoralizing for a team to see its best wrestler lose, which I think you could argue Mostoller is for North Star. If he's not the Cougars best wrestler, then it could be Strasiser, and he also lost in a result that surprised me. Laue has been a solid wrestler over the years, but I haven't really thought that he's been at his best this season. Maybe this big win over Strasiser will get him going.

Clarification regarding District 5 and dual-meet tournaments

I just heard from Brian Creps regarding my previous post on the District 5 duals and I need to make a correction/clarification.
Frankly, I'm quite stunned that the post caused as much of a stir as it has. The portion about District 5 not including the duals in the points for district duals seeding is what has people particularly worked up, especially this paragraph:
There's a school of thought that the reason those results aren't included -- even though the majority of the D5 teams now compete in at least one dual-meet tournament -- is that Bedford doesn't schedule them and that, for some reason, whatever Bedford wants Bedford usually seems to get.
I've been contacted by several Bedford people who were upset with the comment. I should not have included it. I have heard that argument several times - that Bedford didn't want the dual-meet tournaments included because they don't participate in them, and I believed it, so I repeated it.
That's a poor excuse for journalism. I know that blogs generally aren't held to the same standards as newspapers, but I hold myself to a higher standard.
Before repeating the rumors, I should have researched it. While I never said that it was my opinion - only that it's a school of thought - I still shouldn't have put it out there without being sure that it was 100 percent true.
And, according to Coach Creps, it is 100 percent false. He said, and I'm paraphrasing because I don't want some text message typos to reflect poorly on him, Bedford has asked for years to count the dual meet tournament for district rankings and that Chestnut Ridge and Berlin did not support dual meets to count toward rankings. He also said that North Star and some others have consistently been against them counting.
So, according to him, the teams that are in dual-meet tournaments don't want them to count because they could just as easily pile up losses as they could wins. In that vein, according to Odoyelrules, Chestnut Ridge would have slipped to third in the district this year because of its dual-meet losses at Brookville. That certainly would not have been right.
At any rate, I apologize for jumping to the conclusion - and leading others there as well - that Bedford was the driving force behind the decision to keep dual-meet tournament points from counting in District 5.
Bedford, at least in my eyes, was on the right side of the vote.
I still believe there is a better system out there for determining seeds and some combination of strength of schedule - the complete dual-meet schedule - needs to be involved.

District 5 duals pairings

Note: I have been informed that some of the post was incorrect and have made a clarification here. Normally, I would simply correct the post, but since this gotten a lot of attention, I wanted to make sure everyone sees that it has been changed but still allow the original content, as it has been copied and pasted elsewhere.

The deadline for points toward the District 5 Dual-Meet Tournament was Tuesday night and North Star made the most of it. By beating Meyersdale 48-24 on a night when almost no one else in the region held any kind of sporting event, the Cougars leapfrogged Northern Bedford County in the standings.
That's a big spot because it's the difference between wrestling at Berlin Brothersvalley on Thursday and wrestling at Somerset. I'm not sure how the Cougars will match up against the Golden Eagles, but it's much better than they do with the Mountaineers.
Berlin beat North Star 49-18 on Jan. 9, and I don't think that a rematch would go much better for the Cougars. They do, however, have a realistic chance of beating Somerset. In fact, without actually breaking down the dual match by match, I'd give North Star a slight edge.
Of course, even a semifinal victory will probably only stave off the inevitable for a few days, as the winner of Thursday night's match gets top-seeded Chestnut Ridge in Saturday's semifinal round.
If this ridiculous cold spell had not blown through the region, Northern Bedford, likely would have been at Somerset. I'm assuming the Panthers would have beaten Juniata Valley on Tuesday night and held on to the advantage over North Star. Instead, NBC gets to visit Berlin on Thursday.
Since the bus didn't break down and leave the Cougars stranded alongside the road in sub-zero temps, it was definitely a good decision by coach Tim Rosa and the Cougars to go ahead with the match. Instead, it was Northern Bedford that got left out in the cold.
Of course, there's a whole different argument about the wisdom of District 5 not including dual-meet tournaments in its standings. There's a school of thought that the reason those results aren't included -- even though the majority of the D5 teams now compete in at least one dual-meet tournament -- is that Bedford doesn't schedule them and that, for some reason, whatever Bedford wants Bedford usually seems to get.
UPDATE: That school of thought would be wrong, according to coach Brian Creps. He told me that Bedford has consistently voted for dual-meet tournaments to count in the standings. He said that Berlin, Chestnut Ridge and others have pushed for them not to count.
I'm not saying that is the case, but I honestly don't know that there is a good excuse for not including the dual-meet tournaments in the district standings. Is there a chance to rack up some easy wins against bad competition? Sure. But it's also ridiculous that Chestnut Ridge's victory over Burrell and Berlin's win over Greenville - both of which are ranked among the top teams in the state - don't count.

Thomas Subaru tournament finals preview and predictions

We'll be showing live streaming video of the finals at tribdem.com/tdlive so stop over and check it out.

Here's a quick preview of the finals:

106
Aaron Burkett, CR, 25-2, Sr. vs. Sammy Hepler, TV, 20-4, Fr.

Burkett just keeps winning matches, and he's been dominant doing it. The body count this weekend: Three matches, two falls and a tech. fall. I don't know much about Hepler, but he beat Nolan Link in the semis, so he has to be pretty decent. Even so, it's time for me to hope on the Burkett bandwagon. Prediction: Burkett.

113
Brock Biddle, CEN, 14-0, Fr. vs. Jonathan Gabriel, BD, 17-3, So.

I was hoping to get a look at Biddle for the first time this weekend. I just didn't expect it to be when he was pinning Jefferson-Morgan's Brendan Howard in a spladle. I also haven't really seen Gabriel much, but I have been surprised at how close some of his scores have been this year.
Prediction: Gabriel.

120
Caleb Bordner, TV, 24-2, Jr. vs. Joe Swank, BB, 21-2, So.

These two have been on a collision course all tournament, as they've breezed into the finals without really being tested. It's always hard for me to judge teams like Tri-Valley that are so far out of the area that I haven't seen much of them, so I'll go with the hot team.
Prediction: Swank.

126
John Demaske, JM, 24-0, Sr. vs. Adam George, RI, 19-2, Jr.

As I said in an earlier post, I keep doubting George and he keeps proving me wrong. You'd think I'd learn sooner or later, right? But Demaske is just too good, in my opinion.
Prediction: Demaske.

132
Ryan Easter, BD, 17-2, Sr. vs. Mike Carr, SF, 22-0, So.

This one could be pretty interesting. Carr is very good, but I can't go against Easter, especially in Bedford.
Prediction: Easter.

138
Derrick Claar, CR, 23-4, Jr. vs. Garrett Thomas, BD, 15-3, Sr.

Bedford vs. Chestnut Ridge finals are always fun, especially in this tournament. This one should be one of the most entertaining matches of the night. Claar has been dominant of late, although he really struggled with Northern Garrett's Kody Osselburn in the quarterfinals on Friday. Thomas knocked off second-seeded Chase Schaeffer of Tri-Valley in the semis and is no stranger to big matches.
Prediction: Claar.

145
Braden Fochtman, BB, 28-2, So. vs. Trent Crouse, CR, 20-6, Jr.

This was the deepest weight in the tournament and the seeds didn't come anywhere close to matching the results, so final should also be fun, although it could have been really something to watch if the team title hadn't already been decided. Fochtman is the more athletic of the two, but Crouse is such a hard worker and never seems to run out of gas. If it's tied or close in the third, it's hard to bet against him.
Prediction: Crouse.

152
Steve Edwards, BUR, 23-3 Sr. vs. Taylor Cahill, BB, 26-1, Jr.

Edwards has been lights out, with two falls - including one in 55 seconds in the semifinals - and a major decision this weekend. Cahill has had to gut out two of his three wins. I'll say Edwards is in the better form.
Prediction: Edwards.

160
JJ Walker, SF, 23-1, Jr. vs. Bryce Fochtman, BB, 24-3, Jr.

These two split a pair of matches last season, with Fochtman beating Walker in the Thomas final and Walker returning the favor in the Southwest Regional tournament. Fochtman has two falls and a decision this weekend; Walker has two falls and a major. Anyone have a coin?
Prediction: Fochtman.

170
Bill Bowlen, JM, 24-3, So. vs. Auston Hummel, NK, 23-1, Sr.

I don't know much about these two except who they beat to get here. Bowlen held off top-seeded Nico Pecora of Richland in the semis while Hummel pinned Somerset's Landon Lohr in 57 seconds to go along with his other two falls.
Prediction: Hummel

182
Gavin Berkley, MY, 25-1, Sr. vs. Conner Buttry, CR, 24-3, So.
Buttry has made great strides in his second season of varsity after going .500 as a freshman. Berkley has been doing it for a few seasons now. I'll go with the experience.
Prediction: Berkley

195
Jared Beckwith, TY, 19-1, Sr. vs. Phil Kyle, MU, 18-4, Sr.

Beckwith saw his season cut short by a car accident last year, or he likely would have been contending for a medal in Hershey. What I've seen from Kyle has been solid but not spectacular over the years.
Prediction: Beckwith.

220
Buzzy Maines, WB, 23-0, Jr. vs. Stew Trulick, BB, 21-2, Sr.

Both wrestlers come in on a roll, with Trulick pinning all three of his opponents this weekend while Maines has two falls and a major decision. I think Maines is just too good.
Prediction: Maines

285
Al Beattie, BUR, 22-4, Jr. vs. Nik Smith, MU, 20-2, Sr.

Even without the injured Austin Buttry, this was a very deep weight. Morgan Selepack, a state placewinner a year ago, finished fifth. Smith is good, but I'm not sure he's in the same class as Beattie.
Prediciton: Beattie.

Thomas Subaru tournament semifinals

Here's a quick rundown on the semifinal pairings for the Thomas Subaru tournament.
I hope to be able to provide a quick synopsis - or is that synKnopsis? - after each match.

Semifinals
106
1. Aaron Burkett, CR, 24-2, So., vs. 4. Andrew John, SF, 22-5, Jr.
6. Nolan Link, PC, 20-5, Jr. vs. 2. Sammy Hepler, TV, 19-4., Fr.
My picks: Burkett and Link.

Burket won by fall in 1:06. He's looking very good.
Hepler scored a third-period takedown to beat Link. I thought Link looked good early on, but Hepler carried the action in the third and it paid off.

113
1. Brendan Howard, JM, 20-3, Jr., vs. 4. Brock Biddle, CEN, 13-0, Fr.
3. Tommy DeArmitt, BB, 22-3, Sr., vs. 2. Jon Gabriel, BD, 16-3, So.
My picks: Howard and Gabriel.

Huge upset here, as Biddle pinned Howard. I've been anxious to see Biddle, but I certainly didn't expect this. He hit a first-period spladle and it was a clear pin. No doubt about it.
Gabriel beat DeArmitt 10-4. I probably would have expected a bigger win here, but DeArmitt has improved.

120
1. Caleb Bordner, TV, 23-2, Jr. vs. 4. Stephen Rouser, RI, 19-4, Jr.
3. Sage Moist, MU, 20-1, Sr., vs. 2. Joey Swank, BB, 20-2, So.
My picks: Bordner and Swank.
Bordner and Swank each won 8-1. I didn't see too much of either match, but they were both in control from the outset.

126
1. John DeMaske, JM, 23-0, Sr., vs. 6. Jake Boozel, MU, 18-3, So.
6. Justin Opel, NG, 22-1 vs. 2. Adam George, RI, 18-2, Jr.
My picks: DeMaske and Opel.

I didn't see either of these. DeMaske won by tech fall, so not much to talk about there.
I keep underestimating Adam George. After seeing Opel's win over Joe Davis, who I think a lot, I thought he would beat George, but the Richland junior keeps proving me wrong.

132
1. Ryan Easter, BD, 16-2, Sr. vs. 4. Tanner Hetrick, MY, 27-4, Sr.
3. JR Andrejcik, BUR, 13-6 vs. 2. Mike Carr, SF, 21-0, So.
My picks: Easter and Carr.

Missed these as well, but it looks like both Easter and Carr were in control. Easter won 13-2 and Carr won 10-3.

138
1. Derrick Claar, CR, 22-4, Jr. vs. 4. Nick Hoenstine, CEN, 12-1, So.
3. Garrett Thomas, BED, 14-3, Sr., vs. 2. Chase Schaeffer, TV, 19-5, So.
My picks: Claar and Schaeffer.

After a very close win over Northern Garrett's Kody Osselburn last night, Claar looked dominant before getting a fall in the semis. Thomas was up big early, let it get close, then scored late for 13-7 win.

145
8. Parker Bumbarger, WB, 22-0, Sr., vs. 4. Braden Fochtman, BB, 27-2, So.
6. Trent Crouse, CR, 19-6, Jr., vs. 2. Corey Falleroni, BUR, 20-6, Sr.
My picks: Fochtman and Falleroni.
Fochtman scored a third-period takedown then held off Bumbarger's late attacks for a 3-2 win in a good match.
I expected Crouse-Falleroni to be a good one as well, but Crouse stuck him in the first period. I didn't see how he pinned him, but Falleroni looked flat to me. He flipped out and cost his team a point in the standings.
152
1. Steve Edwards, BUR, 22-3, Sr. vs. 4. Jason Stay, BC, 17-6, Jr.
3. Grant Fetchet, SF, 21-1, Sr., vs. 2. Taylor Cahill, BB, 25-1, Jr.
My picks: Edwards and Cahill.

Edwards pinned Stay so quickly (55 seconds) that I didn't even see them on the mat.
Cahill built a big early lead against Fetchet, then held on for a 6-5 win. Very questionable coaching decision by South Fayette. With Fetchet down 6-5 and on top for a restart with five seconds remaining, they did not have him put Cahill on his feet for a change for last-gasp, tying takedown. Is a long shot? Sure. But not nearly as long as the odds of turning someone from a restart with five seconds left.

160
1. J.J. Walker, SF, 22-1, Jr. vs. 4. Levi Niebauer, CH, 17-1, Jr.
3. Ryan Zalar, JM, 19-1, Sr., vs. Bryce Fochtman, BB, 23-3, Jr.
My picks: Walker and Fochtman.

Walker pinned Niebauer in another one that I didn't see while Fochtman built a nice lead before pinning Zalar in the third.

170
1. Nico Pecora, RI, 19-0, Sr., vs. 4. Bill Bowlen, JM, 23-3, So.
3. Landon Lohr, SO, 13-1, Sr., vs. 2. Austin Hummel, NK, 22-1, Sr.,
My picks: Pecora and Hummel.

Bowlen jumped out to a 5-1 lead, then held on for a 6-4 upset of the top seeded Pecora. Hummel had no such problems in the bottom half of the braket, pinning Lohr in just 57 seconds.

182
1. Gavin Berkley, MY, 24-1, Sr., vs. 5. C.J. Steinhilber, NK, 11-3, So.
3. Hunter Connor, NS, 21-5, Jr., vs. 2. Conner Buttry, CR, 23-3, So.
My picks: Berkley and Buttry.

Berkley was his normal solid self in cruising to a 13-2 victory.
Buttry pinned Connor in 3:44. Buttry is another one that I keep doubting, but he keeps putting up results. He's much improved from last season, but the finals appearance against Berkley will tell me a lot about just how much he's improved.

195
1. Jared Beckwith, TY, 18-1, Sr., vs. 4. Alek Hummel, NK, 21-3, Jr.
3. Phil Kyle, MU, 17-4, Sr., vs. 2. Logan Eller, SO, 15-1, Jr.
My picks: Beckwith and Kyle.

Beckwith had a much closer match than I anticipated, going to sudden-victory for the 3-1 win. Hummel scored very late to send it to OT.
Kyle built an early lead over Eller, then saw it nearly evaporate before a desperation lateral-drop attempt by Eller gave Kyle a big margin of victory at 12-6.

220
1. Buzzy Maines, WB, 22-0, Jr., vs. 5. Ty Smith, MY, 26-6, Jr.
6. Darrian Stapleton, MU, 18-3, vs. 2. Stew Trulick, BB, 20-2, Sr.
My picks: Maines and Trulick.

Maines looked very good in dominating a solid wrestler in Ty Smith.
Trulick's pin of Stapleton was pretty entertaining. Stapleton hit a nice headlock to open the match, but Trulick got a reversal. It ended up tied at 6 before they Trulick ended up on top in a scramble and pinned him.

285
1. Al Beattie, BUR, 21-4, Jr., vs. 4. Aaron Gill, CH, 16-0, Sr.
6. Devin Reed, EV, 15-2, Jr. vs. 2. Nik Smith, MU, 19-2, Sr.
My picks: Beattie and Reed.

Beattie looked solid in a 3-0 win over Gill. I only saw the end of the Smith-Reed match, where Smith held him off for a 3-2 win.

What you need to know about the Thomas Subaru Tournament at Bedford

Here's a quick primer on the Thomas Subaru Tournament that will be held at Bedford this weekend. The seeding meeting is Thursday night, so we'll know much more at that point.

I plan to feature live streaming video from the tournament both days at www.tribdem.com/tdlive, but that will depend on factors such as whether or not the technology cooperates (it doesn't always) and what time I can tear myself away from the office. In a perfect world I'd be there for the 10:30 round Friday, but we'll see how it goes.
