Lots of interesting things on Thursday night, including the quarterfinals of the District 5 Duals. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any wrestling. I did a roundup for The Tribune-Democrat.

Analysis: Ryan Spring of the Bedford Gazette covered this, but I don't think his story is available online (at least not for free). Meyersdale was without Hunter Lantz, which resulted in a third forfeit. The highlight match came in the opener, with Tanner Hetrick beating Mason Replogle 4-1, but the key bout was probably at 106, as Trey Childers beat Trevor Thomas to put NBC firmly in the driver's seat.

Analysis: This was another lopsided victory for Berlin, which beat North Star 55-13 on Jan. 10. A couple of big wins here for the Mountaineers, as Braden Fochtman beat Tevin Mostoller (on a controversial late takedown) after losing to him in the previous dual as well as the WestPAC tournament. Blake Miller scored four points in the final five seconds of the third period, then pinned Corey Fritch in overtime. The other big news for Berlin was Mitchell Walker wrestling 195 for the first time. The senior was as at 220 or 285 for every previous match this season and every NWCA listing that I can find for him in his varsity career.
Walker's drop helped make up for the continued absence of Stew Trulick, who sat out a second consecutive dual. Coach Jason Cornell assured me that Trulick will be back for Saturday's semifinal match at Chestnut Ridge.

Analysis: Bedford won the dual, but Hyndman won the most intriguing matches. James Bennett knocked off Michael Brett in sudden victory after Brett bumped up to 195. Also, Richard Moskey beat Caleb Grimes 7-1 at 160.

Analysis: Two weeks ago, Charles Hropovich pinned Tyler Crawford at the Richland Coaches' Duals. It shocked me at the time, because I didn't know much about Hropovich at the time. I still don't, but his NWCA page said he was undefeated until Crawford enacted some serious revenge with a 17-2 technical fall.
Another Highlander got a different result from the schools' first meeting, as heavyweight Aaron Gill pinned Benjamin Mountain. Mountain, who was the second seed in the District 6 tournament last year, beat Gill 12-5 at Richland. Meanwhile, Gill continues to impress. He finished third at the Thomas Subaru Tournament, with his lone loss there being a 2-1 setback to Chestnut Ridge's Austin Buttry.

USA lineup for Dapper Dan

USA All-Star Team Selected for the 39th Annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic

The Wrestling Classic committee selected the USA All-Star Team for the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, the most prestigious high school all-star wrestling meet in the United States.  The Wrestling Classic will be on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at the University of Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House. 

This year, Virginia will challenge the Western Pennsylvania All-Stars in the preliminary dual meet beginning at 4:00 p.m.  The feature match, between the Pennsylvania and USA All-Stars is at 6:00 p.m.

Wednesday Night Recap 1-30-2013

The District 6 Duals were in action at two sites on Wednesday night. Word is that Cambria Heights beat Moshannon Valley, but I haven't seen any box scores yet. A win would have pitted the Highlanders against top-seeded West Branch in the quarterfinals.
Ligonier Valley was scheduled to face fellow Heritage Conference foe Blairsville at Mount Union with the winner taking on the host school.

Analysis: This was moved up a day to accommodate North Star's District 5 Duals match at Berlin Brothersvalley on Thursday. It's sad to see what has happened to the Shade program. A few years ago, it looked like the Panthers might be building a competitive program for the future. Now are winless and can't even field half a team. There was less than 15 minutes of match time in this dual meet.
The one bright spot for Shade was at heavyweight, where Trevor Brown pinned Brady Vinisky. Brown is one of only two Panthers with a winning record.
North Star got an impressive technical fall from Michael Baker at 132 pounds. I would have guessed that he would have had a tougher time with Mike Manges.

Analysis: I did quick phone interview with Westmont coach Matt Beaujon (while sitting in the Sheetz parking lot in Meyersdale) to get his take on the matches. Todd Irwin of the Altoona Mirror was there for both matches. You can read his story here.
I'm still amazed at Westmont has been able to do this season. I wouldn't expect more than three or four regional qualifiers from the squad, yet they finished among the top eight in the district and, with a few breaks, could have thrown a real scare into Huntingdon. Logan Blackburn getting pinned in a spladle at 120 was probably at least a 9-point swing. Judging by scores alone, the 145 and 113 matches could have gone Westmont's way but didn't. If the Hilltoppers win those three matches it's a 37-31 Huntingdon victory. I never would have guessed at the beginning of the year that Westmont would have any chance of keeping this close.
I was surprised that Devon Green beat Steven Zipf 16-3 at 126 pounds.I would have guessed it would be closer.
The first match was total domination for Westmont, as Claysburg was without Josh Brown. I don't know much about the rest of the Bulldogs' lineup.

Analysis: Penns Valley went on to beat Juniata in the quarterfinals, so Penn Cambria's loss doesn't look too bad. The Panthers are pretty inexperienced, but coach Todd Niebauer got victories out of some of his better wrestlers. Seth McLendon and Michael Eckenrode are two of his most dependable guys. Niebauer told me (during a phone interview from that same Sheetz parking lot) that he was impressed with Jon Wilkinson's pin at 285 pounds. The Centre Daily Times didn't send a writer to Mifflintown for the meet, but they did post a short story, though most of it focuses on Penns Valley's victory over Juniata.

Analysis: I covered this one for The Tribune-Democrat, so you can read what I felt was the key match in this one there. I also took photos, which didn't make the paper, but you can see pictures of each match here.
Meyersdale did almost everything right here to get the No. 3 seed in District 5. From David Stanton staying on his feet against Blake Miller (and off his back) to Collin Day getting a major to Brady McKenzie avoiding one.
The dual could have been different if Eric Darr had gotten the late takedown that he was close to in his opening match with Seth Deist.
Berlin was hurt by the loss of 195-pounder Stew Trulick, who was on the bench in street clothes. Coach Jason Cornell said he was still dealing with an injury from the Thomas tournament. He wouldn't say what the injury was, but there was a big bandage on Trulick's forehead.
Meyersdale knows all about injuries, as coach Chadd Sines has been without upper weights Ty Smith and Justin Dunmeyer all season.
Chris Miller needed a late score to beat Tanner Hetrick at 132.

Analysis: Somerset needed a victory here to make the District 5 Duals, but the shorthanded Golden Eagles couldn't make it happen. Jeff Maurer covered it for the Daily American. You can read his story here. The big news was that Jake Nickelson injured his shoulder in practice and missed the match. Coach Brian Barron told Maurer that he hopes to have him back for the individual postseason.
Of the matches that were wrestled, there were no major shockers, but the final bout was the biggest surprise to me, as Corey Fritch needed overtime to beat Kody Williams.

Analysis: The anticipated rematch at heavyweight never materialized. A BleacherCoaches post says that Tussey Mountain 285-pounder Mitchell Hall missed the match due to illness. I don't know much about Tussey Mountain, having only seen a few of their wrestlers at Bedford last weekend. I would have guessed that Shad Brumbaugh was the Titans' second-best wrestler, but he got pinned by Dan Albright at 195.
