UPDATED Tuesday night recap 1-15-2013

Plenty of action last night. Not many great duals, but some good individual matches.

Chestnut Ridge 75, Everett 3
106-Aaron Burkett, CR, tech. fall Dalton Klotz, 15-0 (5:23).
113-Blake Dunlap, CR, pinned Benjamin Stover, 1:33.
120-Sam Shank, CR, pinned Mahlon Akers, 3:03.
126-Derrick Claar, CR, pinned Joey Bryner, 4:53.
132-Trent Crouse, CR, pinned Anthony Hall, 1:18.
138-Colby Hillegass, CR, maj. dec. Shayne Rininger, 12-3.
145-Ejai Rock, E, dec. Jerimiah Zimmerman, 4-3.
152-Kyle Winegardner, CR, forfeit.
160-Connor Buttry, CR, pinned Dylan Hockenberry, :59.
170-Bradie Bollman, CR, pinned Jarrett Brantner, 1:59.
182-Tyler Dibert, CR, pinned Zach Claycomb, 1:58.
195-Brad Winegardner, CR, pinned Brandon Bittinger, 1:55.
220-Dan Albright, CR, pinned Eli Claycomb, 2:46.
285-Austin Buttry, CR, forfeit.
Records: Chestnut Ridge 12-1; Everett 2-12.

Analysis: No. 2-ranked Chestnut Ridge couldn't have looked much better in its final tuneup before taking on No. 23 Berlin Brothersvalley on Thursday. The Lions dominated from start to finish. Not only did they win 13 of 14 matches, but they got at least one bonus point in every one of those. Only one of Ridge's wins went the distance and nine of the 11 bouts they won on the mat were by fall. Of those, six were in the first period. So, yeah, the Lions look ready for Berlin.

Berlin 75, Shade 6
182 –Trevor Moore, BB, forfeit.
195–Shane Pepper, BB, forfeit.
220–Stew Trulick, BB, pinned Cody Edwards, :18.
285–Trevor Brown, S, pinned Anthony Collins, 4:22.
106–Emil Kiesnowski, BB, dec. Blake Sheehan, 4-0.
113-Tommy DeArmitt, BB, forfeit.
120–Joey Swank, BB, forfeit.
126-E.J. Custer, BB, pinned David Dietz, :20.
132-Chris Miller, BB, pinned Mike Manges, 1:37.
138-Braden Fochtman, BB, pinned Collin Jarosyk, :20.
145-Eric Darr, BB, forfeit.
152-Blake Miller, BB, forfeit.
160-Ryan Landis, BB, forfeit.
170-Bryce Fochtman, BB, forfeit.

Records: Berlin 5-0; Shade 0-5.

Analysis: Berlin won by a similar score as Chestnut Ridge, but the Mountaineers didn't get as much action on the mat as the Lions. Berlin won five of six bouts, including four by first-period fall. The biggest thing that jumps out at me about this box score is the name that isn't in it: Mitchell Walker. The Mountaineers senior, whose career has been plagued by injury problems, didn't wrestle. I've been told  he has a slight injury.

Somerset 52, Penn Cambria 19
113-Garret Foster, S, pinned Zach Stevens, :20.
120-Damian Jano, S, pinned Ryan Biter, :12.
126-Sheldon Wagner, S, pinned Austin Farabaugh, 3:36.
132-Jon Fabian, S, maj. dec. Dominic Farabaugh, 14-0.
138-Michael Eckenrode, PC, maj. dec. Daniel Talley, 8-0,
145-Mike Laue, S, pinned Aaron Hogue, 5:38.
152-Jacob Driskel, PC, dec. Kody Willilams, 7-3.
160-Landon Lohr, S, pinned Brendon Myers, 1:45.
170-Thomas Hocket, S, pinned Matt Wyland, 4:25.
182-Logan Eller, S, pinned Matthew Smith, 1:23.
195-Jacob Nickelson, S, pinned Henry Schlosser 2:20.
220-Seth McLendon, PC, forfeit.
285-Jon Wilkinson, PC, forfeit.
106-No match.

Records: Somerset 4-5; Penn Cambria 11-7.

Analysis: This is a good win for a Somerset squad that struggled to start the season. THe highlight match was the last one wrestled, as Jacob Nickelson (11-0) pinned Henry Schlosser (19-5) at 195 pounds.

Westmont 60, Johnstown 18
106-Drake Dorian, WH, forfeit.
113-Dan Yost, WH, forfeit.
120-Logan Blackburn, WH, forfeit.
126-Nick Mical, WH, forfeit.
132-Steven Zipf, WH, forfeit.
138-Mark Barbera, WH, dec. Rodney Hall, 8-1.
145-Kyle Geibig, WH, forfeit.
152-Mike Walsh, WH, pinned William Gomez, 1:10.
160-Jesaiah Wilson, J, pinned Cameron Rock, 3:53.
170-Colin Barron, WH, maj. dec. Richard White, 9-1.
182-Bailey Piscatello, J, pinned Drake Leech, 3:54.
195-Nate Litvin, J, pinned Jake Buck, 1:41.
220-Don Shovestull, WH, pinned Giovanni Feliciano, 1:44.
285-Christian Roman, WH, pinned Noah Eckenrode, 1:59.
Records: Westmont Hilltop 5-1; Johnstown 0-5.

Analysis: Not too much to look at here, with six forfeits. Westmont won five of the eight matches and has quietly gotten off to a 5-1 start. Colin Barron's 9-1 major over Richard White at 170 was one of only two matches that didn't end in a fall and was arguably the best match of the night. I've been told that Cameron Rock nearly had Jesaiah Wilson pinned at 160 but the Trojan ultimately was the one to come up with the fall.

Ligonier Valley 45, Richland 36
120-Adam George, R, forfeit.
126-Matt Caldwell, LV, pinned Steven Rouser, 1:27.
132-Mitch Brown, LV, forfeit.
138-Marcus McKool, R, pinned Nick Stahl, 2:36.
145-Nick Naglic, R, forfeit.
152-Tyler Smith, LV, dec. Hunter Coburn, 8-3.
160-Derek Croyle, LV forfeit.
170-Trevor Henry, R, pinned Justin Bellas, 4:52.
182-Nico Pecora, R, forfeit.
195-Dominick Shawley, LV, pinned Josh Haymaker, :26.
220-Ray Marsh, LV, forfeit.
285-Matt Moose, R, pinned Kyler Kruel, :20.
106-Gordon Matson, LV, forfeit.
113-Justin Patrick, LV, pinned Tyler Bodenschatz, 3:05.
Records: Ligonier Valley 3-2; Richland 1-6.

Analysis: Sadly, the most interesting thing about this dual is that every literally other match was a forfeit. The worst part about the anomaly is that it kept most of the better wrestlers from doing anything other than stepping on the mat to get their collective hands raised. The biggest match was probably at 113, where Justin Patrick pinned Tyler Bodenschatz in 3:05.

Bedford 62, Forest Hills 15
120-Jake Keiper, FH pinned Brandon Martin, 1:14.
126-Ryan Easter, B pinned Josh Gould, 1:05.
132-Garrett Thomas, B pinned Ian Bopp, 3:32.
138-Toby Brett, B dec. Travis Templeton, 13-8.
145-Kenny Collins, B forfeit.
152-Tanner Williams, B pinned Ian Shugars, 3:39.
160-Cody Law, FH dec. Caleb Grimes, 11-4.
170-Zack Pinkas, FH pinned Nicholas Wendt, 3:39.
182-Robert Minnick, B, forfeit.
195-Michael Brett, B pinned Billy Kovalcik, :41.
220-Chance Williams, B, forfeit.
285-Justin Easter, B, pinned Matt Marra, 5:47.
106-Jonathan Gabriel, B forfeit.
113-Jake Warren, B, pinned Tanner McCall :59.
Record: Bedford 10-2; Forest Hills 4-4.

Analysis: I'm a little surprised at how lopsided this one was, but it's an example of what always seems to make Bedford so good. The Bisons find ways to keep matches close with the other team's best wrestler (see 160 pounds) and then get rolling and pick up bonus points where you might not expect them to (113). The Bisons also got victories from couple of guys who have gotten some difficult assignments over the years in Robert Minnick and Justin Easter. Judging by score only, it looks like Forest Hills got a nice showing from Travis Templeton, who only lost 13-8 to Toby Brett at 138 pounds.

Cambria Heights 53, Central Cambria 24
138-Michael Zabinski, CH, maj. dec. Kevin Bednar, 10-1.
145-Austin Gill, CH, pinned Tyler Karlinsey, 3:56.
152-Levi Niebauer, CH, maj. dec. Gabe Seymour, 10-2.
160-Dalton Waksmunski, CH, pinned Luke Kozorosky, :46.
170-Travis Yahner, CH, pinned Devyn Bowser, 1:58.
182-Tyler Crawford, CH, pinned Calvin Crow, :28.
195-Tom Howell, CH, pinned Anthony Mezzello, 5:28.
220-Dominic Novella, CH, pinned Jordan O'Farrell, :41.
285-Aaron Gill, CH, forfeit.
106-Ian Ostrowski, CC, pinned Mark Zabinski, 1:02.
113-Michael Dautlick, CH, pinned Corey Lazaration, 2:38.
120-Tom Opdenhoff, CC, forfeit.
126-Bradley Taylor, CC, forfeit.
132-Joseph Davis, CH, dec. Steven Pennington, 7-1.

Records: Cambria Heights 6-2; Central Cambria 5-10.

Analysis: Not too much jumps out at me here, although from reading that story that the Altoona Mirror's John Hartsock did here I'm a little surprised to see that Travis Yahner was down 5-0 at 170 before pinning Devyn Bowser. I haven't seen Cambria Heights yet and didn't realize that heavyweight Aaron Gill is off to such a great start (11-1). He'll get a chance to open some eyes in a few weeks, when the Highlanders compete in the Thomas tournament. Speaking of Thomas, CH standout Brad Thomas didn't take part in this one. Not sure why. He wrestled in the Highlanders' previous match, against Forest Hills on Jan. 10.

Marion Center 45, Northern Cambria 18
106-William Davis, NC, forfeit.
113-David Wiles, MC, pinned Ron Schilling,1:41.
120-Noah Tomallo, NC, forfeit.
126-No match.
132-No match.
138-Isaac Stewart, MC, dec. Nolan Paronish, 6-4.
145-Brandon Heberling, MC, dec. Gus Yahner, 7-4.
152-Brandon Prenni, MC, dec. Bryan Nealen, 5-2.
160-Phil Crook, MC, pinned Brad Mikitko, 1:4.
170-Charlie Brewer, MC, forfeit.
182-Joey Frontino, NC, forfeit.
195-Jake Cribbs, MC, forfeit.
220-Alec Strong, MC, forfeit.
285-Austyn Polisky, MC, forfeit.
Records: Marion Center 5-7, Northern Cambria 1-4.

Analysis: There were only five matches contested, but this is a situation of quality over quantity. The 138-, 145- and 160-pound matches all caught my interest, as they matched up some of each team's best wrestlers. Nolan Paronish and Gus Yahner each had only one loss entering the night while Brad Mikitko, according to the Colts' NWCA page. Unfortunately for Northern Cambria, they matched up against some Marion Center's best in Isaac Stewart, Brandon Heberling and Phil Crook, respectively.

Conemaugh Township 46, Portage 15
106-Aaron Griffith, CT, forfeit.
113-Tyler Albright, CT, forfeit.
120-Kody Ofsanko, CT, pinned Brady Ratosky, :16.
126-No match.
132-Matt Bridge, CT, maj. dec. Nick Lutz, 8-0.
138-Chase Fox, P, dec. Casey Berchick, 7-0.
145-Tanner Cahill, CT, pinned Bryan Husar, :58.
152-Taylor Cahill, CT, dec. Caleb Kephart, 5-1.
160-Ryan Grosik, CT, pinned Frank Fordick, :20.
170-No match.
182-Cody Kephart, P, pinned Andrew Gowarty, 5:04.
195-Charles Litzinger, P, pinned Steven Meyers, 1:09.
220-Zach Svencer, CT, dec. Cameron Neel, 2-1.
285-Robbie Mills, CT, forfeit.
Records: Conemaugh Township 3-2; Portage 2-12.

Analysis: There were some interesting matchups here, with the best, arguably, coming at 160 pounds. That's where Taylor Cahill beat Caleb Kephart 5-1. Cahill is 17-1 while Kephart is 12-8, with two of the losses coming to Cahill. Township got an impressive win from Matt Bridge at 132 pounds. Nick Lutz is one of Portage's better wrestlers at 13-7, so I was a little surprised by Bridge's 8-0 victory. On the other side, I was impressed by Chase Fox's 7-0 decision of Casey Berchick at 138. Berchick has had a rough go of it as a sophomore, as he has seemingly drawn one of the opposing team's top wrestlers in each dual.

Meyersdale 51, Northern Garrett 21
285-Brandon Platter, NG, forfeit.
106-Lane Rounds, NG, dec. Trevor Thomas, 5-4.
113-Billy Charlton, M, forfeit.
120-Brady McKenzie, M, pinned Cody Platter, 1:59.
126-Collin Day, M, dec. Justin Opel, 3-0.
132-Tanner Hetrick, M, maj. dec. Cody Lauck, 11-1.
138-Hunter Lantz, M, tech. fall Brysan Day, 16-0 (4:22).
145-David Stanton III, M, dec. Chris McCarr, 4-1.
152-Seth Deist, M, pinned Kyle Beard, 1:48.
160-Ryan Miller, NG, pinned Austin Imler, 1:28.
170-Kordell Yoder, NG, forfeit.
182-Gavin Berkley, M, forfeit.
195-No match.
220-Ty Smith, M, forfeit.

Records: Meyersdale 7-2; Northern Garrett not reported.

Analysis: I couldn't find this on the NWCA site, so the box is from the Daily American. Northern Garrett is a regular in the Thomas Tournament and Meyersdale is headed to it this year as well, so this box might be of interest to some of my Cambria County readers who don't normally see much of the Red Raiders. It looks to me like the best match of the night came at 126 pounds, where Collin Day - a returning state qualifier - beat Justin Opel 3-0. It looks like the Huskies, who had been a powerhouse a few years ago, have fallen on hard times, with five empty weights. Meyersdale's Ty Smith hasn't wrestled a match yet this season, as far as I can tell, but he did pick up a forfeit.
