Thursday Night Recap 1-24-2012

Lots of action tonight, but have to write a story on this match before I get to other stuff.

106-Austin Lawson, WH, maj. dec. Hunter Cunningham, 15-5.
113-Drake Dorian, WH, pinned Judah Napolitano, 2:58.
120-Dan Yost, WH, pinned Ayrton LaMantia, 4:21.
126-Logan Blackburn, WH, pinned Dillon Palmer, 2:38.
132-Steven Zipf, WH, dec. Nick Pecze, 6-4.

160-Channing Crowder, B, pinned Riley Schropp, 5:01.
170-Bobby Thompson, B, pinned Cameron Rock, 2:32.
Records: Blairsville 15-2; Westmont Hilltop 7-2.

Analysis: There was a bit of controversy swirling around this one. You can read my story for The Tribune-Democrat here.
As far as what happened on the mat, the biggest surprise was seeing Scott Thompson back in the lineup for Blairsville. Coach D.J. Doak told me that Thompson just got the cast off his arm yesterday and they held practice at 6:30 last night specifically so that he could practice. Having him back was huge in such a close match.
Watching this dual gives insight into what a great coach Matt Beaujon is. Look at the names in his lineup and see how many of them you recognize. Many of them started wrestling last year or this year. The fact that he has them competing with a squad like Blairsville is impressive.
The biggest match of the night was at 138 pounds, but it didn't turn out to be the best one. I was surprised at how Noah Tarr totally dominated his match with Mike Walsh. It was 5-0 after one period and Tarr kept the pressure up throughout.
The only other surprise for me was the fact that Drew Doak couldn't come up with a pin at 152. That's not meant as a knock on Seth Ray, but as returning state placewinner, Doak is being counted on to come up with six points against an inexperienced wrestler. Doak was in control from the outset – there's no doubt about that – but he didn't come close to a fall. In fact, he didn't even get any backpoints (although I could argue that he should have). A major instead of a tech fall or a pin didn't hurt the Bobcats here, but it could somewhere down the line.

Huntingdon 58, Central Cambria 13
220-Tyler Wholaver, H, pinned Jordan O’Farrell, :59.
285-Dalton Kocik, H, dec. John Branick 9-5, (2 OT).
106-Collin Glorioso, H, forfeit.
113-Ian Ostrowski, CC, maj. dec. Jacob Dubbs, 14-3.
120-Tom Opdenhoff, CC, dec. Matt Wilson, 4-2.
126-Devon Green, H, pinned Justin Jeffers, 1:22.
132-Nathan Russell, H, pinned Coltin Makin, :39.
138-Jon Wagner, H, pinned Kevin Bednar, 5:03.
145-Eric Lynn, H, pinned Tyler Karlinsey, 1:58.
152-Logan Fisher, H, maj. dec. Gabe Seymour, 8-0.
160-Matt Norris, H, pinned Luke Kozorosky, 1:14.
170-Hunter Rupert, H, dec. Cordale Kline, 12-10.
182-Calvin Crow, CC, pinned Logan Gallagher, 3:16.
195-Mitchell Lauer, H, pinned Alex Croft, 1:34.
Records: Huntingdon 10-2; Central Cambria 8-15.

Analysis: Not much insight here, as I haven't seen much of either of these teams. I know Huntingdon is solid from top to bottom (as they so often have been over the past five years) and Central Cambria has some inexperienced wrestlers in spots. I'll be interested to get my first extended look at Collin Glorioso this weekend at Bedford. Central Cambria's Tom Opdenhoff picked up a big win, beating Matt Wilson 4-2 at 120.

Cambria Heights 43, Central 31
182-Tyler Crawford, CH, pinned Jared Ponder, 1:34.
195–Isaac Little, C, pinned William Hoover, :23.
220–Dominic Novella, CH, forfeit.
285–Aaron Gill, CH, pinned Wes Hueston, 1:30.
106–Mark Zabinski, CH, pinned Kayron Joseph, 1:12.
113–Kale Burkett, C, pinned Michael Dautlick 4:53.
120–Collin Ulery, C, forfeit.
126–Joseph Davis, CH, forfeit.
132–Terry Albright, C, maj. dec. Eric Kuskoski, 12-1.
138–Nick Hoenstine, C, dec. Michael Zabinski, 4-2.
145–Austin Gill, CH, maj. dec. Trae Shirey III, 10-1.
152-Levi Niebauer, CH, dec. Mike Mock, 3-0.
160–Canyon Burda, C, pinned Travis Yahner, 3:38.
170–Dalton Waksmunski, CH, pinned Blake Burket, 5:17.
Records: Cambria Heights 8-2; Central 6-9.

Analysis: The biggest thing that jumps out at me here is who isn't in the lineup for Cambria Heights: Brad Thomas. He hasn't wrestled in two duals since Joe Davis dropped to 126 and he's not among the seeds for the Thomas Tournament. I don't know what the situation is, but it certainly doesn't look like a good sign for the HIghlanders.

  1. Interesting turn of events in the Blairsville-Westy match. I'm perplexed as to why the referee would not follow the rule book at weigh-ins. It's pretty cut and dry. However, as a fan, you always want to see the best kids on the mat.

That being said, I am really surprised, if it happened the way the article states, that the Blairsville coach made the decision to wrestle Scott Thompson one day and one evening practice after having a cast removed from his arm. It is the coaches number one priority to ensure the safety of his student-athletes. And while the doctor may have cleared the wrestler for participation, there is no way that the young man's arm was physically ready for live competition. Injuries like that require rehabilitation to build the strength of the muscles back up. I hope that this decision did not cause more damage and threaten the young man's post season. Just my opinion.

  2. I agree with the above comment as far as wrestling Thompson. Seems like in this situation both thompsons should have been sidelined or at least bobby not wrestling at his weight class. None the less im not really surprised when u look at blairsvilles coaching staff the last thig you would say is they are a class act with much in the lines of personal experience/credentials.

  3. Get your facts straight before you start bashing people anonymously, bunch of cowards..protocol was followed at weigh ins due to them calling the d6 head of officials at weigh ins...scotty was cleared by his doctor and parents, enough said..and to attack someones integrity or class anonymously is real classy!

  4. I agree with the first persons comments on here despite the above persons hostility. After reading the article and seeing Matt beaujons comments, if the kid got three tries at the weight then protocol wasn't followed. I don't care I'd they called the president. The rules are the rules. And Scott Thompson was fortunate to wrestle someone who was inexperienced rather than someone with more experience who would have gone after the arm repeatedly. Would have sucked to jeopardize ur personal season for a dual that will prove inconsiquential in the end.
