Thursday Night Recap 1-31-2013

Lots of interesting things on Thursday night, including the quarterfinals of the District 5 Duals. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any wrestling. I did a roundup for The Tribune-Democrat.

District 5 Duals
Quarterfinals
No. 6 Northern Bedford 35, No. 3 Meyersdale 33
132-Tanner Hetrick, M, dec. Mason Replogle, 4-1.
138-Damian Corle, NB, forfeit.
145-Drew Gartland, NB, maj. dec. David Stanton, 11-1.
152-Seth Deist, M, maj. dec. Ty Bechtel, 13-2.
160-Lucas Kolinchak, NB, pinned Austin Imler, 3:46.
170-Duelin Douglas, NB, maj. dec. Tim Hines, 10-2.
182-Billy Dunbar, M, pinned Justin Brunner, 3:31.
195-Gavin Berkley, M, tech. fall Derick Eichelberger, 17-2 (4:38).
220-Eric Grace, NB, forfeit.
285-Chase Ott, NB, forfeit.
106-Trey Childers, NB, dec. Trevor Thomas, 4-0.
113-Billy Charlton, M, pinned Brandon Defibaugh, 1:20.
120-Brady McKenzie, M, dec. Jared Helsley, 7-2.
126-Collin Day, M, pinned Judah Gochnour, 1:31.
Records: Northern Bedford 10-6; Meyersdale 9-4.

Analysis: Ryan Spring of the Bedford Gazette covered this, but I don't think his story is available online (at least not for free). Meyersdale was without Hunter Lantz, which resulted in a third forfeit. The highlight match came in the opener, with Tanner Hetrick beating Mason Replogle 4-1, but the key bout was probably at 106, as Trey Childers beat Trevor Thomas to put NBC firmly in the driver's seat.

No. 4 Berlin Brothersvalley 57, No. 5 North Star 18
113-Tommy DeArmitt, BB, forfeit.
120-Joe Swank, BB, pinned Tayte Mostoller, 3:21.
126-D.J. Custer, BB, pinned Colton Gennett, 1:19.
132-Chris Miller, BB, tech. fall Michael Baker, NS, 5:39.
138-Braden Fochtman, BB, dec. Tevin Mostoller, 8-6.
145-Eric Darr, BB, dec. Luke Lepley, 2-1.
152-Blake Miller, BB, pinned Corey Fritch, 6:58 (SV).
160-Bryce Fochtman, BB, maj. dec. Jonathan Thomas, 11-3.
170-Trevor Moore, BB, pinned Austin Connor, 2:32.
182-Hunter Connor, NS, pinned Shane Pepper, 3:50.
195-Mitchell Walker, BB, pinned Kevin Horner, 3:44.
220-Levi Albright, NS, forfeit.
285-Anthony Collins, BB, pinned Brady Vinisky, 1:14.
106-Lenny Beeman, NS, pinned Emil Kiesnowski, 2:16.
Records: Berlin Brothersvalley 12-2; North Star 9-6.

Analysis: This was another lopsided victory for Berlin, which beat North Star 55-13 on Jan. 10. A couple of big wins here for the Mountaineers, as Braden Fochtman beat Tevin Mostoller (on a controversial late takedown) after losing to him in the previous dual as well as the WestPAC tournament. Blake Miller scored four points in the final five seconds of the third period, then pinned Corey Fritch in overtime. The other big news for Berlin was Mitchell Walker wrestling 195 for the first time. The senior was as at 220 or 285 for every previous match this season and every NWCA listing that I can find for him in his varsity career.
Walker's drop helped make up for the continued absence of Stew Trulick, who sat out a second consecutive dual. Coach Jason Cornell assured me that Trulick will be back for Saturday's semifinal match at Chestnut Ridge.

Bedford 57, HOPE for Hyndman 18
113–Jake Warren, B, dec. Robbie Snyder, 2-0.
120-Ryan Easter, B, forfeit.
126-Garrett Thomas, B, pinned Chris Gibbner, 1:02.
132-Kyle Swindell, B, forfeit.
138-Toby Brett, B, forfeit.
145-Kenny Collins, B, forfeit.
152-Tanner Williams, B, pinned Tyler Clites, 3:13.
160-Richard Moskey, H, dec. Caleb Grimes, 7-1.
170-Steven Miller, H, pinned Cam Sheeder, 4:50.
182-Robert Minnick, B, forfeit.
195-James Bennett, H, dec. Michael Brett 4-2 (SV).
220-Chance Williams, B, forfeit.
285-Dylan Emerick, H, pinned Nate Shoemaker, 2:33.
106-Jon Gabriel, B, pinned Tanner Clites, 1:16.
Records: Bedford 15-2; HOPE for Hyndman 12-12.

Analysis: Bedford won the dual, but Hyndman won the most intriguing matches. James Bennett knocked off Michael Brett in sudden victory after Brett bumped up to 195. Also, Richard Moskey beat Caleb Grimes 7-1 at 160.

Regular Season
Cambria Heights 53, United 17
138-Michael Zabinski, CH, dec. Grant Ingalls, 5-0.
145-Austin Gill, CH, dec. Tyler Mack, 11-5.
152-Levi Niebauer, CH, pinned Brent Mack, :36.
160-Anthony Michaels, U, pinned Travis Yahner, 4:44.
170-Dalton Waksmunski, CH, pinned Josh Young, :23.
182-Tyler Crawford, CH, tech. fall Charles Hropovich, 17-2 (3:27).
195-Tyler Oliver, U, tech. fall William Hoover, 16-0 (2:05).
220-Andrew Deitman, U, pinned Anthony Mezello, :45.
285-Aaron Gill, CH, pinned Benjamin Mountain, 3:51.
106-Mark Zabinski, CH, forfeit.
113-Michael Dautlick, CH, forfeit.
120-No match.
126-Joe Davis, CH, pinned Warren Lowther, 3:56.
132-Eric Kuskowski, CH, pinned Devon Walker, 3:51.
Records: Cambria Heights 12-5; United 5-13.

Analysis: Two weeks ago, Charles Hropovich pinned Tyler Crawford at the Richland Coaches' Duals. It shocked me at the time, because I didn't know much about Hropovich at the time. I still don't, but his NWCA page said he was undefeated until Crawford enacted some serious revenge with a 17-2 technical fall.
Another Highlander got a different result from the schools' first meeting, as heavyweight Aaron Gill pinned Benjamin Mountain. Mountain, who was the second seed in the District 6 tournament last year, beat Gill 12-5 at Richland. Meanwhile, Gill continues to impress. He finished third at the Thomas Subaru Tournament, with his lone loss there being a 2-1 setback to Chestnut Ridge's Austin Buttry.
