UPDATE - Local wrestler wins NHSCA Nationals

A number of local wrestlers headed to the beach this week for the National High School Wrestling Coaches Association's National Tournament, and Ligonier Valley junior Josh Patrick won the the junior national championship at 113 pounds.
The link above has the complete brackets. Once there, click on the PDF versions, they're much easier to read than the links they have.
I pored over the brackets and think I managed to find all of the local wrestlers involved. (The find function also helped). Here's what I was able to find:

Seniors
None registered. I know some of the top local guys, like North Star's Nick Roberts and Forest Hills' R.J. Brydon either have had surgery or are scheduled to, so that might be why some of our biggest local names aren't in the tournament. At least one underclassman - Forest Hills junior Cody Law - is wrestling in the Flonationals event this weekend in Philadelphia. I haven't been able to find complete brackets for it, but Law is seeded sixth at 160 pounds, which is very impressive.



Juniors
Josh Patrick of Ligonier Valley the 113-pound title, beating J.J. Johnson of South Carolina 5-3 in the finals to cap a 5-0 week.
Conemaugh Township’s Tanner Cahill went 4-2 but did not place in a 62-man bracket at 145 pounds while Chestnut Ridge’s Tyler Dibert was 4-2 at 170 pounds.
Dan Albright, Dibert’s teammate at Chestnut Ridge, went 1-2 at 195 pounds.

Sophomores
Ligonier Valley’s Justin Patrick placed second at 106 pounds in the sophomore nationals. Patrick won his first five matches before losing 11-1 to Delaware’s Brent Fleetwood in the championship match. Fleetwood had four technical falls in six matches.
Seth McLendon of Penn Cambria placed fifth at 220 pounds. McLendon went 4-2 in the tournament.
Chestnut Ridge’s Austin Buttry went 3-3 and placed sixth at 285 pounds.

Freshman
Conemaugh Township’s Taylor Cahill went 4-1 NS finished fifth at 152 pounds.

Berlin’s Bryce Fochtman went 4-3 and finished sixth at 145 pounds.

Cambria Heights’ Levi Niebauer went 2-2 at 138 pounds while teammate Dalton Waksmunski went 1-2 at 160 pounds.

Somerset County All-Star Banquet

There was plenty of familiarity at the annual Somerset County All-Star Wrestling Banquet, which was held in Somerset on Friday afternoon.
Not because all of the wrestlers and coaches in the back room at Hoss's Steak and Sea House all know each other pretty well - though they do - but because the ceremony was so similar to last year's event.
Somerset went home with the American Trophy as team champion for the second year in a row for the Golden Eagles and North Star's Nick Roberts was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the fourth consecutive year.
The award is given to the top finisher from the county, so Roberts, who won his third PIAA championship in Hershey earlier this month, was a shoo-in for the award.



"I’m just really thankful for all the people that have helped me: all of my coaches, my family, friends. I just hope I can do good in college," said Roberts, who has accepted a scholarship to wrestle at Ohio State University.
The Golden Eagles went 18-4 to win the team championship in a strong year for the county.


"I feel the county has stepped up," Somerset coach Brian Barron said. "If you look, from school to school, there are multiple names that stand out when you hear them. As a whole, I’d say the county is coming around and looking better and better each year."

Well-deserved honor for local official

Congratulations to Bruce Haselrig. As Mike Mastovich wrote in Thursday's editions of The Tribune-Democrat, the venerable official is one of seven inductees into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame.
The impact that he's had on wrestling in the Johnstown area is incalculable. A member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Pennsylvania Chapter, he started the wrestling program at Pitt-Johnstown, which has developed into a Division II powerhouse under Pat Pecora.
Haselrig has been a wrestling official for the past 39 years working some of the biggest events in the nation, including 19 PIAA tournaments and six NCAA DII championships. He has served as the rules interpreter for District 6 for the past 28 years and is president of the NCAA Eastern Wrestling League Officials Association.

But more than any of that, he's been a great ambassador for the sport. Bruce understands his role as a referee and that he'll often end up being the focal point of at least one team's - or if he's really good both squads' - wrath. He accepts that willingly and shrugs off the slings and arrows directed his way.
I know that firsthand, as my father is a serial instigator when it comes to officials. More than two decades ago, he was yelling at Haselrig for a perceived slight to a Berlin wrestler. Rather than have him ejected from the gym - as Bruce could have done - he walked over toward the stands and stuck his tongue out at my dad.
While I'm not sure I'd recommend the strategy to young officials, in this case, it worked. Rather than infuriating him, it diffused the situation, as my father couldn't do anything more than laugh at the response.
To this day, my dad makes it a point to seek out and speak with Bruce any time he's doing an event. And my dad continues to harangue Bruce any time he thinks a Berlin wrestler has been wronged (most times I agree with the man in the striped shirt), but as all good officials can, Bruce separates those harsh words from what happens before and after the match.
In fact, he even had my parents pose for a picture with him this past season because of their longevity as fans (and sometime detractors). Bruce said that he was going to keep the photo and add the words that they were his "biggest fans."
That might or might not be true. But, as his induction shows, there are plenty around the region and state that have an appreciation for all that he has done for the sport of wrestling.
Enjoy being in the spotlight for doing something right, Bruce. It doesn't happen often for officials, but it's well-deserved.

Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic results

Not a good night for the fans at Fitzgerald Field House. Aside from Richland's John Rizzo, Central Mountain's Brian Brill and Derry Area's Jimmy Gulibon, there wasn't much to cheer about. But Gulibon did send the fans home somewhat happy with a 10-3 victory over Cory Clark, a four-time champ from Iowa who was 186-1 in high school.

PJW results

I don't usually do too much with junior high or pee wee wrestling, but placing at the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling tournament is an impressive accomplishment. Considering there is only one classification, compared with two at the PIAA level, it can be argued that winning PJW title is even more difficult than claiming one in the older age group.
Here are the wrestlers that I was able to find from The Tribune-Democrat's coverage who placed in the top 8 of Saturday's competition in Hershey. Three of them brought home championships: Chesntut Ridge's Jared McGill and Ligonier Valley's Robert Patrick in the 11-12 age group and Bedford's Jonathan Gabriel in the 13-14 category.
A quick glance at the results shows me a couple of things:
1. After a great season in District 5, there should be a few more quality wrestlers on the way to the varsity level in the next year or two.
2. Johnstown's record-setting varsity season could be the start of big things for the Trojans. While they don't have any placewinners in the junior high age group, there are five overall, the most of any local school.

CORRECTED -- The best day in wrestling?

Note: Thanks to an alert reader who, knowing that math isn't my strong suit, let me know that there are 80 NCAA All-Americans, not 40 as I wrote. (I really can multiple 8x10 and come up with 80 in most cases. Not sure what I was thinking there.) I have corrected the post to show that.

It's one of my favorite times of the wrestling year.
Not the end of the high school season (that would be my wife Tami's favorite).
No, it's the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic. If you've never been to "The Rose Bowl of Wrestling," you're really missing out on a fantastic event.
I preview the event - which includes a pair of local wrestlers this year in Richlnd's John Rizzo and North Star's Nick Roberts - in Sunday's editions of The Tribune-Democrat. The paper and e-editions (PDF versions of the actual pages) include complete lineups for the event along with the Intermat ranking for each wrestler.
Intermat's Josh Lowe also has a great preview of the event if you pay to receive the platinum content.
The great thing about the Classic is that it gives you a chance to see the NCAA champs of tomorrow today. For the past 36 years, at least one NCAA champion has participated in the event. That includes three from last weekend in St. Louis - Ohio State's Logan Stieber (133), Michigan's Kellen Russell (141) and Penn State's David Taylor (165).
Of the 80 All-Americans crowned at "Arch Matness," exactly one quarter (by my count) had wrestled in the Classic. If you've been to every Classic for the past five years, as I have, you'd have seen each of these All-Americans before they ever pulled on a college singlet.

John Rizzo video

Richland does a great job with multimedia, and the school proved it again with this 10-minute video chronicling John Rizzo's rise to prominence.
It combines video footage from the very young Rizzo (yes, he was small at one time) to his third state championship run from a few weeks ago. It also contains photos and some music to get your blood pumping.
Overall, it's very well done and worth checking out if you have the time.

Back (finally)

Hey everyone, sorry I've been AWOL for awhile. I just got so bogged down with various assignments at the state tournament and then at the NCAA tournament that I haven't had time to blog.
Those of you that follow me on Twitter know I've been doing updates on there. And for those of you that don't ... what's wrong with you?
Just kidding.
The updates obviously won't be as frequent now that the season is over, but I'll continue to try to do some stuff.
Here's a story I did for the Lewistown Sentinel on Penn State winning the NCAA title.

Class AAA states updates

Greater Johnstown's Malcolm Harris looked solid in his 9-3 victory over Upper Perkiomen's Wolfgang McStravick (great name, huh?). Harris scored four takedowns - including two in the first period - in an impressive victory. He'll need to be even better on Friday to have a chance against Central Dauphin's Shyheim Brown, who is ranked 19th nationally by Intermat.

Westmont Hilltop's Ryan Burnheimer lost 4-1 to West Chester Rustin's Tyler Wood. Burnheimer, who beat Wood 11-6 earlier in the season, could never get his offense going. After Wood nearly scored a takedown in the first, Burnheimer got close to one in a scramble, but it ended scoreless. Burnheimer gave up a second-period escape and got turned with a power half in the third. He also gave up a stalling point before escaping with 20 seconds remaining.

Westmont Hilltop's Josh Duplin looked as dominant as one can in a 3-2 double-overtime victory. Duplin, who weighs about 235 pounds, consistently got in on single-leg attacks against Warwick's Tom Devenney, but was afraid of getting trapped under the 280-pound heavyweight and couldn't finish. They traded escapes in the second and third periods - although Devenney was warned for stalling and easily could have given up the match-deciding point on a second call. Instead, Duplin had to take advantage of his reversal in the first half of the second overtime period. He gave up an escape to Devenney in the second-half of the period, but it didn't matter much.

First-Round Consolations

Westmont's Ryan Burnheimer bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Blue Mountain's Travis Moyer. The match was scoreless through two periods, as Burnheimer rode him out in the second period. Burnheimer escaped two seconds into the third and, after a dubious stalling call, scored a takedown with 14 seconds remaining. 

Class AA states updates

Class AA is done for the day, and it wasn't pretty for local wrestlers. Of the 19 wrestlers from The Tribune-Democrat's coverage area, only 10 survived the first day - nine are in the quarterfinals and one is still alive in the consolations.

Preliminary Round Recaps

Ligonier Valley's Justin Patrick didn't waste any time, as he pinned Tri Valley's Caleb Bordner in 1:11. Patrick scored a takedown 14 seconds in, then used an arm bar and a half-Nelson to turn Bordner. Patrick eventually settled into a deep half for the pin.

Good start for local guys. Josh Patrick scored two takedowns and a tilt to go along with three escapes in his 9-5 victory over a very good Joey Byers. Bedford's Ryan Easter scored a takedown with 14 seconds left in the first overtime period for a 3-1 victory over Pen Argyl's Matt Williams. Maybe Williams shouldn't have been so upset about not getting Easter in their PIAA dual meet here a couple weeks ago.

Nick Roberts scored a 13-2 major decision over Oley Valley's Joey Fick, but the two-time state champion wasn't pleased with his performance. He said he got headbutted early in the match and never felt right. He led 12-0 after two periods, but was outscored 2-1 in the third. Meyersdale's Collin Day didn't fare so well, losing 11-1 to Northeast champ Cole Walter of Mifflinburg.

Tough start for Central Cambria's Ben Rager. He was down 2-1 to Schuylkill Valley's Arty Walsh after one period, then got hit in a low-leg cradle and pinned in the second. I didn't see it, but Chestnut Ridge's Shane Pfaunmiller lost 8-0 to Ridgway's Corey Bush.

Penn Cambria's Nick Szala got taken down twice in the first period by Brookville's Brock Zacherl and trailed 4-1 after Zacherl rode him out in the second period. Zacherl escaped in the third and won 5-1.

Forest Hills' R.J. Brydon got off to a bit of a slow start, but he picked up the pace in his 7-2 victory over Robbie Moretz of Halifax. After a scoreless first period, Brydon escaped in the second and added two takedowns for a 5-1 lead after two. Another takedown in the third set the final.

As he's done so often this season, Conemaugh Township's Cory Berchick overcame a slow start. He gave up the first takedown to Palmerton's Cody Grohotolski and was tied at 4 in the third period before scoring an escape, a takedown and, ultimately, a fall in 5:06. Shade's Wolf Otten didn't fare so well, as he lost 6-3

Forst Hills' Cody Law and Central Cambria's Tony Risaliti each advanced with victories. Law scored three first-period takedowns and another in the third for his 7-2 victory over Pequea Valley's Mitchell Ball, but the Ranger was unhappy with his performance, saying he should have been more aggressive. Risaliti scored all five of his points in the second period, then held on for a 5-4 victory over Greenville's Randy Perkins. Somerset's Michael Sutton got pinned by Tri-Valley's Sam Scheib in less than a minute.

United's John Blankenship is normally known for his low-scoring, defensive matches, but the Lion found his offense in an 11-3 victory over Ridgway's Jake Himes. Blankenship scored takedowns in each period and added a second-period reversal and three nearfall points in the third. Chestnut Ridge's Tyler Dibert had a much tougher time with Bethlehem Catholic's Elliot Riddick, who is the favorite to win the title. Riddick scored a 26-11 technical fall in 5:00.

Richland's John Rizzo had an eventful opening-round match in his quest for a third state championship. Rizzo gave up a first-period takedown to Joey Kaufman of Halifax, but escaped and trailed 2-1 after one. In the second, Rizzo looked like he was headed toward another fall, but Kaufman rolled through and reversed him to make it 4-1. Rizzo escaped, then added a takedown with 13 seconds remaining to tie it at 4. A third-period escape gave Rizzo his first lead and he made it stand up by holding off Kaufman's takedown attempts. Bedford's Jacob Krupa also advanced, pinning Catasauqua's Luke Garner in 1:53. Berlin Brothersvalley's Jacob Craig, who has beaten Krupa three times this season, wasn't so fortunate. He struggled with the length of Seneca's Matt Mongera in a 10-2 loss.

First-Round Consolation Recaps

(I missed a lot of these matches, I was still trying to track down interviews, but I'll recap those that I did see).

Meyersdale's Collin Day was eliminated with a 9-2 loss to Nate Schwab of Smethport. Didn't see much of it, but I know that Schwab was up 7-1 after two periods.

Central Cambria's Ben Rager, who was ranked second in the state for much of the season, saw his high school career come to an end with an  8-0 loss to Charleroi's Aaron Toth. Rager was undefeated entering the Southwest Regional tournament last weekend, but was beaten twice there - by Keystone Oaks' Nick Zanetta and Toth (2-0 in the consi finals). It was tough to see Rager, who seems like a genuinely nice kid and had such high hopes, have his season end so abruptly. After a scoreless first, Rager rode Toth for most of the second before giving up a reversal and three backpoints. Penn Cambria's Nick Szala also had a tough ending to his high school career. I didn't get to see his 4-2 loss to Burrell's Philip Marra, but I heard there was a questionable takedown in it. Szala beat Marra 3-1 in the consolation finals last week.

Yet another high school career came to an end, as Wolf Otten, who was Shade's first district champ last year and first state qualifier this year - lost 6-2 to Lancaster Catholic's Stephen Loiseau. Otten was down 5-1 after two periods and could only get a stalling point off Loiseau in the third.

Somerset sophomore Michael Sutton saw his season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Brookville's Brett Smith. After a scoreless first period, Smith escaped in the second and took Sutton down with 1:16 left in the period. He rode Sutton out for the remainder of that period and all of the third.

Chestnut Ridge's Tyler Dibert lost to Chartiers-Houston's Garrett Vulcano for the second consecutive weekend. This time it was 3-1, as Vulcano scored a second-period takedown after Dibert escaped earlier in the period. Vulcano added a third-period escape to set the final.

Berlin Brothersvalley's Jacob Craig became the only local wrestler to win this round, as he beat Camp Hill's Gus Bostdorf.* Craig scored a takedown and two nearfall points in the first period, then added three backpoints in the second. A third-period reversal set the final.

This class is Darian Cruz's to lose. The Bethlehem Catholic junior is 39-2, with losses to Matthew Kolodzik of Miami Valley High School and Billy Rappo of Council Rock South. Kolodzik won an Ohio state championship on Saturday and Rappo is the favorite to win the 113-pound title in AAA this weekend, so neither will stand in the way of Cruz, who is ranked second nationally by Intermat.
Unfortunately for Ligonier Valley's Justin Patrick, he's on the same side of the bracket as Cruz. That means he'd need to pull off a massive upset to finish better than third.

People have been awaiting this for months. Kittanning sophomore Jason Nolf is 83-0 in his career with a PIAA title, a victory over two-time champion Nick Roberts of North Star under his belt this season and a No. 3 national ranking (at 120 pounds). Trinity's Ryan Diehl, a junior who is 34-0 this season, won two West Virginia state championships before transferring to the Harrisburg-area school and pinned Nolf in the offseason.
While Nolf and Diehl are on a collision course, the destination is the semifinals instead of the championship match, since they're on the same side of the bracket (although I'm not sure it makes much difference with multi-mat placement rounds).
The good news for Ligonier Valley's Josh Patrick and Bedford's Ryan Easter is that they're on the opposite side of the bracket from Diehl and Nolf, but that doesn't mean either has an easy matchup. Easter gets Matt Williams of Pen Argyl, who memorably threw his headgear when Bedford bumped Easter away from him in the PIAA Dual-Meet Championships. Patrick, meanwhile gets Boiling Springs' Joe Byers, who finished second in the state at 103 last season.

This weight would have had a lot more intrigue to it if Kittanning's Jason Nolf hadn't dropped to 113 pounds. As it is, North Star's Nick Roberts, who is ranked fourth nationally by Intermat, will be the clear favorite to win his third PIAA title. It won't be a walk in the park, however. He could have Bermudian Springs' Brad Farley, who is 40-1, in the quarterfinals and Bethlehem Catholic's Zeke Moisey, who gave Roberts his toughest match in last year's state tournament, in the finals.
Meyersdale's Collin Day, has thrived as an underdog in the postseason, a role he'll continue to play as he gets Northeast champ Cole Walter of Mifflinburg in the first round.

All eyes will be on Derry Area's Jimmy Gulibon here, as he attempts to become just the 10th wrestler in history to win four PIAA titles. While he's certainly favored to do so, he does have another former state champion - Schuylkill Valley's Arty Walsh - on the opposite side of the bracket. But Gulibon, who Intermat has ranked first nationally, should be able to make history on Saturday afternoon, assuming that the knee that he injured at POWERade is OK (and he told me at regionals that it is).
Central Cambria's Ben Rager was ranked second in the state headed into last weekend, but he lost twice without ever getting a chance to prove himself against Gulibon. Rager won't have to wait long for an opportunity for redemption, as he gets Walsh in the opening round.

Bethlehem Catholic's Randy Cruz is ranked sixth nationally by Intermat, but is he even the favorite here? Pennsylvania Wrestling Rankings has him third in Class AA while Off the Mat has him second to Biglerville's Laike Gardner, who beat Cruz 4-2 in the Southeast Regional final on Saturday. Cruz was the runner-up at 119 last season, losing to Derry Area's Jimmy Gulibon in the finals, while Gardner finished second at 130, losing to Benton's Coltin Fought. Reynolds' Dylan D'Urso, who also is in this weight, placed third at 130, with his only loss coming to Fought. Throw in Benton's Colt Cotten, who was fourth at 119 last season, and these could be some really fun semifinals.

Last year, Pen Argyl's Mike Racciato beat Reynolds' Adam Matthews 10-2 in the 135-pound final. This year, he could face Austin Matthews - Adam's younger brother - for the championship. Despite last year's title and his 43-1 record, Intermat hasn't shown Racciato any love. Meanwhile, Austin Matthews, who is 45-1, is ranked fifth nationally. Racciato spent the regular season wrestling at 145 (and even 152) before dropping for the postseason. His lone loss was a 7-4 setback to Juniata's Zach Beitz. Matthews has only wrestled above 145 twice this season and his only loss came at the Ironman tournament, where he was pinned by Walsh Jesuit's Nate Skonieczny.
Penn Cambria's Nick Szala could run into Racciato in the semifinals. If Szala were to lose that, he could ended up facing two other District 6 wrestlers - Blairsville's Noah Tarr and Claysburg-Kimmel's Ty Dively - in the consolations.

Beitz, who has been ranked No.1 all season, is the favorite, even with Bethlehem Catholic's Ryan Todora on his side of the bracket. Brydon's side includes Northwest champ Evan Delong of Kane and Northeast winner Kyle Barnes of Hughesville, who is undefeated.

Greenville's Cody Copeland, the runner-up at 145 last season, is the favorite here. How dominant has Copeland been? He is 41-0 with 34 pins (and three forfeits). Of his 34 pins, 28 of those were in the fist period, including ones over state qualifiers Kevin Nowakowski of Harborcreek and Drew Doak of Blairsville. Nowakowski hasn't lasted longer than 1:12 in any of his three matches with Copeland, and he's the regional runner-up and is 31-6 against all other competition. In the four matches where he doesn't have pins, Copeland has allowed a grand total of four points.
As Southwest Regional champion, Conemaugh Township's Cory Berhick gets Southeast Regional fourth-place finisher Cody Grohotolski, but that's not easy task. Grohotolski's losses last weekend came to Brandywine Heights' Pete Renda, who is probably the favorite to face Copeland in the finals, and Tri-Valley's Ty Schoffstall, who handed Berchick the only blemish on his 41-1 record.

Forest Hills' Cody Law has been ranked No. 1 for most of the season by the Pennsylvania Wrestling Rankings, except for when he was replaced by Central Cambria's Tony Risaliti after the Red Devil beat the Ranger in the District 6 final. Now, we'll finally get to see if those two can live up to those lofty standards. Law will be making his first appearance in Hershey, but he doesn't have too much experienced competition on his side of the bracket. Risaliti looks to have the tougher path to the finals, with unbeaten Kurt Meske of Central Columbia, returning placewinner Francis Mizia of Betworth and Southeast Regional champion Sam Scheib in his half of the bracket.

Richland's John Rizzo will be gunning for his third PIAA
Class AA championship this weekend.

Richland's John Rizzo is looking for his third PIAA title, and even though he's finally picking on someone his own size, this might be the best competition he's faced in the state tournament. Rizzo won both of his titles at 285 pounds, but decided to drop to 220 this season, where he'll face more athletic competition. In order to capture his third crown, Rizzo could have to beat Fort LeBoeuf's Evan Daley, a sixth-place finisher at 215 pounds last year in the semifinals and Lackawanna Trail's Eric Laytos - a 2010 champ at 215 - in the finals.
Berlin Brothersvalley's Jacob Craig gets a tough draw, with Seneca's Matt Mongera in the opening round. Should Craig win that, he'd likely have Laytos in the semifinals. Bedford's Jacob Krupa gets Southeast champion Luke Garner of Catasauqua in the first round.

It looked like last weekend would match up the two top-ranked heavyweights in the state in Northern Bedford's Quinton Hixson and Fort Cherry's Corey Garry. But Hixson got hit in a headlock in the quarterfinals and had to settle for third place. Could they meet again? It's always hard to predict this weight class because so many of the matches come down to coin tosses. Garry is in the top half of the bracket along with Northeast champ Nazar Mironenko, who is 39-2 with his only losses coming to Westmont Hilltop's Josh Duplin. Hixson will have to contend with Northwest Regional winner Blake Heim of Reynolds, Southeast champ Malcolm White of Wyomissing and Southwest runner-up Nate Grandelis of Chariters-Houston, among others, in the bottom half.
