Analysis: After all the talk about how close the first one was despite the 43-19 score, Ridge actually won by more this time. Berlin got off to a good start, winning the first five matches for a 17-0 lead, but Ridge erased that in three weight classes, with pins by Bradie Bollman, Tyler Dibert and a forfeit for Brad Winegardner, which came about because Berlin still didn't have Stew Trulick back in the lineup. Still no word on the injury, but he has a big bandage on his forehead. If I had to guess, I'd guess skin disease, but I haven't confirmed that.
Dan Albright beat Mitchell Walker 3-2 in a good match at 220. Unofficially, I heard that Walker's plan won't allow him to go to 197 pounds. He was able to do it last week because the Mountaineers got an additional pound or two. He weighed 202.2 on Saturday.
The other top match, in my opinion, came at 120. Berlin freshman Joe Swank beat Derrick Claar 4-3 to avenge a Thomas Tournament loss. Swank got a first-period takedown and third-period reversal for the win.

Analysis: Northern Bedford led 27-26 before the lineup flipped over at 106, then it was all Bedford. I didn't get to see too much of this, as I was concentrating more on the Chestnut Ridge-Berlin match. I don't know too much about Northern Bedford, but I would have expected Damian Corle to keep it closer than 11-1 with Toby Brett at 138 and Drew Gartland to beat Kenny Collins 5-0 at 145. Gartland had the 5-0 lead in the first but couldn't score in the final two periods.
Caleb Grimes was up 14-0 in the third and got caught on his back and almost pinned by Lucas Kolinchak but held on for a 15-5 victory.
Why did Berlin get an additional pound or two last week? Maybe I'm reading it wrong.
ReplyDeleteIf you (or opponent) wrestle two days in a row you get an additional pound. Three days in a row would be two pounds.
