Bedford survives scare at North Star and other results from 12/10/13

The first big dual night of the season had me at Boswell for Bedford's annual rivalry match with North Star. I covered it for The Tribune-Democrat.

Bedford 34, North Star 32
145-Garrett Thomas, B, dec. Tevin Mostoller, 6-4.
152-Corey Fritch, NS, dec. Toby Brett, 3-2.
160-Gus Strasiser, NS, pinned Ty Zimmerman, 3:37.
170-Dillion Charlton, NS, maj. dec. Dan Brett, 11-3.
182-Hunter Connor, NS, dec. Chance Williams, 4-2.
195-Kevin Horner, NS, pinned Matt Kline, 1:02.
220-Brayden Crowley, BD, dec. Ray Burley, 4-2.
285-Nate Shoemaker, BD, pinned Brady Vinisky, 1:11.
106-Lenny Beeman, NS, forfeit.
113-Eric Colangelo, NS, maj. dec. Noah Baughman, 15-4. NS 32-12
120-Jon Gabriel, B, maj. dec. Colton Gennett, 16-2.
126-Jake Warren, B, forfeit.
132-Kyle Mehle, B, forfeit.
138-Ryan Easter, B, forfeit.
Records: Bedford 1-0; North Star 0-1.

Analysis: This was a fun dual meet and closer than I expected. After seeing North Star at Conemaugh Township last weekend, I thought they had might give Bedford a run, but two points after giving up three straight forfeits? Didn't see that coming.
The first thing to take out of this is that North Star is better than it has been in a few years. The second is that Bedford will be much better when it gets its wrestlers down to weight. Garrett Thomas earned a solid win over Tevin Mostoller at 145, but he's not a 45-pounder. Neither is Toby Brett a 52-pounder, as he found out against Corey Fritch. That's not a knock on Fritch by any means. Brett could not mount any real offense against him and Fritch deserved to win.
I would think Bedford will get its wrestlers down over the course of the season and be much better for it.
North Star coach Tim Rosa thinks his team could have won this if he wasn't missing three wrestlers - unconfirmed reports blame grades - and he's probably right. While Easter likely would have picked up six points no matter who he wrestled, it's not hard to imagine North Star making up three points between the other two weights to get a victory. The Cougars might not have any outstanding wrestlers, but they have a lot of decent ones and could be a sneaky-good dual meet team this year.

Berlin Brothersvalley 64, Conemaugh Township 12
106-Nathaniel Thomas, CT, dec. Kyle Boyce, 2-1 (UTB).
113-Aaron Griffith, CT, pinned Emil Kiesnowski, 3:42.
120-Tommy DeArmitt, BB, pinned Michael Steiner, :25.
126-Joe Swank, BB, pinned Barry Blank, :50.
132-Kody Ofsanko, CT, dec. E.J. Custer, 8-3.
138-Storm McDonald, BB, pinned Brandon Stahl, 2:31.
145-Braden Fochtman, BB, pinned Colton Stahl, 1:08.
152-Taylor Cahill, BB, maj. dec. Casey Berchick, 11-2.
160-Bryce Fochtman, BB, forfeit.
170-Trevor Moore, BB, forfeit.
182-Shane Pepper, BB, forfeit.
195-Toby Cahill, BB, forfeit.
220-Stewart Trulick, BB, forfeit.
285-Anthony Collins, BB, pinned Zachary Svencer, 3:45.
Records: Berlin 1-0; Conemaugh Township 0-1.

Analysis: I had actually planned on going to this one tonight to see my nephew make his varsity debut, but he got sick and couldn't wrestle, so it'll have to wait until Penn Cambria this weekend. In hindsight, I'm glad I went to Boswell instead, because this one got pretty ugly.
After watching the Indians at their tournament this weekend, I thought maybe they could keep it sort of close against Berlin. But then I started thinking about the Mountaineers' lineup and realized it's just way too strong, top to bottom.
The 106-pound bout sounds like it was a good one. Thomas impressed me and Boyce looks like he should be a quality lightweight for an already stacked Berlin squad. I was told that Boyce was called for a technical violation for grabbing the headgear in the ultimate tiebreaker.
Kody Ofsanko's 8-3 victory over E.J. Custer was the other highlight bout of the night. Both have had some success over the past couple of years but haven't been able to take that big step forward just yet. Ofsanko is off to a good start after winning a CT title last weekend, so maybe he might just be getting there.
The 152-pound bout between Taylor Cahill and Casey Berchick also is interesting, considering that Cahill came from Conemaugh Township. I think Cahill has always been bigger than Berchick in the past, but I'm sure they know each other quite well.

Penn Cambria 47, Greater Johnstown 15
182-Jacob Driskel, PC, dec. Richard White, GJ, 5-3.
195-Matt Wyland, PC, maj. dec. Nate Litvin, 8-0.
220-Johnathan Wilkinson, PC, pinned Kamar Walker, 2:24.
285-Noah Eckenrode, GJ, forfeit.
106-Nolan Link, PC, forfeit.
113-No match.
120-Justin Rowe, GJ, forfeit.
126-No match.
132-Zach Stevens, PC, pinned Malik Walker, 1:59.
138: Jacob Wilkinson, PC, forfeit.
145-Mike Eckenrode, PC, maj. dec. Ameer Connor, GJ, 11-1.
152-Dane Myers, PC, forfeit.
160-Austin Farabaugh, PC, pinned William Gomez, 3:18.
170-Jesaiah Wilson, GJ, dec. Dominic Farabaugh, 10-4.
Records: Penn Cambria 4-2; Greater Johnstown 0-1.

Analysis: Penn Cambria continued its solid start to the season. Despite having some holes in their lineup, the Panthers have been wrestling well. Jacob Driskel started the dual off with a nice victory over Richard White, who was a regional qualifier last year at 152. The other match that jumps out at me is at 145. I haven't gotten to see much of Ameer Connor yet, but I heard from a coach that he could be a solid newcomer. From the score alone, it doesn't look like he's ready yet for a seasoned vet like Mike Eckenrode.

Somerset 57, Central Cambria 20
145-Sheldon Wagner, S, maj. dec. Kerry Kirsch, 13-5.
152-Mike Laue, S, pinned Kevin Bednar, 1:31.
160-Dan Talley, S, tech. fall Cordale Kline, 15-0 (2:48).
170-Landon Lohr, S, pinned Bryce Thompson, 3:20.
182-Casey Pyle, S, pinned Jake Myers, 2:56.
195-Logan Eller, S, pinned Tom Howell, 3:28.
220-Jack Hause, S, pinned Brendon Smith, 1:16.
285-John Branick, CC, pinned Jarrett McKenzie, :35.
106-Max Murin, CC, maj. dec. Quinn Cole, 14-1.
113-Ian Ostrowski, CC, forfeit.
120-Damian Jano, S, forfeit.
126-Garrett Foster, S, pinned Jami Stohan, 3:39.
132-Tommy Opdenhoff, CC, maj. dec. Austin Hemminger, 14-4.
138-Levi Schrock, S, pinned Noah Long, 1:08.
Records: Somerset 1-0; Central Cambria 3-3.

Analysis: Not too many surprises here. I'd have expected Somerset to dominate, and the Golden Eagles didn't disappoint. The Red Devils' top wrestlers - Tommy Opdenhoff, Max Murin and Ian Ostrowski - each won. Every match resulted in bonus points, so there isn't much that sticks out. The best matchup to me looks like it would have been Opdenhoff and Austin Hemminger at 132. Hemminger was one of the names mentioned to me this offseason as a newcomer to watch. Wrestling Opdenhoff in your first varsity match (or your 50th) isn't an easy assignment, so the 14-4 loss isn't that surprising.

Forest Hills 55, Richland 18
120-Steven Rouser, R, dec. Jake Keiper, 6-4.
126-Triston Law, FH, maj. dec. Adam George, 9-0.
132-Evan Bess, FH, pinned Ben Feloga, :55.
138-Josh Gould, FH, dec. Dan Cerhousen, 2-0.
145-Nick Naglic, R, pinned Travis Templeton, 5:23.
152-Blaine Harteis, FH, forfeit.
160-Blake Custer, FH, forfeit.
170-Nico Pecora, R, pinned Ian Shugars, 1:14.
182-Trevor Henry, R, dec. James Nevins, 9-6.
195-Alex Paskowski, FH, forfeit.
220-Jeff Leach, FH, forfeit.
285-Zach Kline, FH, forfeit.
106-Gage McCall, FH, forfeit.
113-Tanner McCall, FH, forfeit.
Records: Forest Hills 1-0; Richland 0-1.

Analysis: There are a lot of names in here that I don't know, so it's hard to give much insight. There were some close matches, but they weren't really among the few big names in the box score. Triston Law's 9-0 victory over Adam George would probably be the highlight. Law was a state placewinner last year, so the fact that George was able to stay within nine points is a feather in his cap.
