132-Max Caldwell, LV, dec. Brady Gardner, 2-0.
Records: North Star 1-1; Ligonier Valley
Analysis: North Star continues to impress in the early going, turning this into a pretty lopsided win. Ligonier Valley was without the services of impressive sophomore Nathan Trottier. He forfeited his final match at the Sheetz Holiday Classic on Saturday, so it's quite possible that he's still injured. It's good to see that the Rams got some of their guys back that skipped out on the Penn Cambria tournament because of the Great Herpes Scare of 2013, but they still had five holes in the lineup. That's not a good sign for a team that should have close to a full lineup.
North Star got off to a great start to Michael Baker and Tevin Mostoller. Baker pinned Dalton Clark, who had a nice fourth-place showing at Penn Cambria, to get things going. Mostoller delivered an impressive major-decision victory over Daniel Croyle, a 25-match winner from a year ago. Croyle was one of those who opted out of the Sheetz tournament.
I don't know who Carlos Chavez is, but beating Beeman is a solid win for
him. It's a name that I don't recognize at all. He's listed as a senior
and it was his first match of the year, so kudos to him for knocking
off an experienced wrestler like Beeman. Derek Croyle pinning Dillion
Charlton was also a good win for the Rams.
Penn Cambria 43, Richland 27
106-Nolan Link, PC, forfeit.
113-No match.
120-Stephen Rouser, R, forfeit.
126-Adam George, R, forfeit.
132-Zach Stevens, PC, pinned Ben Saloga, 2:26.
138-Dan Verhovsek, R, dec. Jacob Wilkinson, 6-0.
145-Nick Naglic, R, pinned Mike Eckenrode, 3:11.
152-Dane Myers, PC, forfeit.
160-Austin Farabaugh, PC, forfeit.
170-Dominic Farabaugh, PC, maj. dec. Trevor Henry, 12-0.
182-Nico Pecora, R, pinned Jacob Driskel, 5:31.
195-Matt Wyland, PC, forfeit.
220-John Wilkinson, PC, dec. Mathew Moose, 10-4.
285-Jacob Wineland, PC, forfeit.
Records: Penn Cambria 6-2; Richland 0-2.
Analysis: Another forfeit-fest, as only six matches were actually contested. The highlight match for me would have been Nick Naglic pinning Mike Eckenrode at 145. Naglic had a rough day on Saturday, dropping back-to-back matches at the Sheetz Holiday Classic. Eckenrode is no slouch, so it looks like that win could get Naglic back on track.
John Wilkinson's 10-4 victory over Matt Moose is an interesting one. Wilkinson has shown signs of improvement and beating Moose, who was 19-5 last season at heavyweight, is a nice stepping stone.
