Not a heavy schedule, but that's not surprising for a Wednesday night.

Records: Berlin 2-0. Meyersdale 0-1.
Analysis: I didn't expect this to be close, but given that it's a grudge match between wrestlers, coaches and fan bases that love to beat the other more than anyone else, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, especially after Meyersdale stunned Berlin (and me) last season.
I was able to attend this match and it was a great atmosphere for high school wrestling. The dual didn't quite live up to the setting as the Mountaineers jumped out to a 30-3 lead, but it was nice to see a match with NO FORFEITS. I can't remember the last time that happened.

The highlight match was at 145, as pair of former District 5 runners-up met. It really wasn't as close as the score would indicate. Taylor Cahill got a takedown in the first 40 seconds and another a minute later. He added another in the second period while all Deist could manage was three escapes that weren't conctested. Deist had one good shot in the third period but couldn't finish it. Cahill looked out of gas in the third, but I was told that he had been sick and it just caught up to him at that point. Either way, it was an impressive performance against Deist.
The other top matchup, which also featured a Cahill, went Meyerdale's way. The dual had long been decided by the time that Gavin Berkely and Toby Cahill stepped on the mat. That didn't stop Berkley from putting in a dominating performance. He scored a first-period takedown and added a reversal and three-point nearfall in the second for a 7-0 lead. That left Cahill with little option but to go for a big move and that didn't work well against someone with Berkley's defensive prowess. It was an interesting matchup between styles and experience levels, as Berkley is a fundamentally sound senior who went to states last year while Cahill is a dynamic freshman who should make plenty of noise in the future.
The other match that I found interesting came at 160 pounds, where Berlin's Bryce Fochtman beat Meyersdale's Christian Hutzell 4-0. Fochtman was clearly frustrated by the freshman, as evidenced by a couple of instances that the Meyersdale faithful saw as after-the-whistle cheap shots, although none drew the attention of official Jack Pencil. Hutzell didn't really show any offense, but his ability to stay with someone the caliber of Fochtman (the first-period takedown came with two seconds remaining) could make him a youngster to watch.
Overall, I thought this was a much better performance out of Berlin than what I saw at the Sheetz Holiday Classic last weekend. Some of that was the inexperience of Meyersdale's squad, but part of what I thought would make the Mountaineers so good this year is the fact that they have a solid to good wrestler at every weight class, so they should be able to get mismatches at weights where the opponent has an inexperienced wrestler. On Wednesday night, they did that.

Analysis: The highlight match came at 160, where Levi Niebauer beat Phil Crook 3-0. Crook came into the season with 86 career wins, but he hasn't really seemed to progress throughout his career, having taken fifth in District 6 as a freshman, third as a sophomore and fifth as a junior. Niebauer, however, is on an upward trajectory, having gone from 14-10 mark in 2010-11 to a 27-11 record and a District 6 runner-up finish last year. Crook could have made a big statement - and helped his team in a big way - here, but Niebauer was able to get the victory.
Marion Center's big names - Brandon Heberling and Isaac Stewart - stayed unbeaten, although Stewart's 6-0 victory over Richard Legros was a bit closer than I would have expected.
The Highlanders got a big finishing kick with pins from Dennis Link and William Hoover to win the dual meet.
