Richland's John Rizzo finished second in the Beast of the East tournament in Newark, Del., on Sunday.
Rizzo, a two-time PIAA champion at 285 pounds who is now wrestling 220, was the second seed in the tournament. He was beaten 2-1 by top-seeded Kyle Snyder of Good Counsel (Md.). Rizzo scored an escape to go up 1-0 in the second, but was called for stalling a second time on his feet to tie the match. Snyder took the lead with a third-period escape, then held off Rizzo's attacks for the victory.
I have more details on Rizzo's performance in The Tribune-Democrat.
After a pair of falls in Saturday's action, he beat David Farr of Blair Academy (N.J.) 5-2 in Sunday morning's quarterfinal round. Rizzo, who Intermat ranks as the fifth-best heavyweight in the country, then beat A.J. Vizacarrondo of Wyoming Seminary, the nation's seventh-ranked 220-pounder, in rideout. He was down 3-0 before rallying in the final seconds to send it to overtime. Rizzo escaped, then scored a takedown with 18 seconds remaining in the third period to send it to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period on their feet, Vizacrrondo escaped quickly in the second overtime period for a 4-3 lead. Rizzo matched that in the overtime period where he started on the bottom, sending it to the ultimate rideout period.
Needing to keep Vizacarrondo down for the victory, Rizzo was able to lock up a cradle and hold on for the 5-4 victory. Flowrestling now has video of the match here.
