Season starts with a bang

Westmont's Josh Duplin controls
Nik Smith of Mount Union
during their final-round match.
Nine wrestlers from The Tribune-Democrat's coverage area got off to a strong start by winning Conemaugh Township Holiday tournament titles.
Westmont Hilltop led the way with four champs - Mike Walsh (132), Ryan Burnheimer (182), Eric Kowalewski (195) and Josh Duplin (285).
Duplin was dominant, as his first four opponents didn't combine to last one period. That's right. He had falls in 1:19, :16, :05 and :08. He didn't need a second or third period until the final round, when he pinned Mount Union's Nik Smith in 4:31.

Richland's John Rizzo was almost as dominant at 220 pounds, even though most of his opponents were simply trying to survive a period. The only one to do it was Westmont's Don Shovestull, who got a big round of applause from the Hilltop fans for successfully fighting off his back against Rizzo.
Conemaugh Township's Cory Berchick
lifts Westmont's Tanner Patton during
their 152-pound bout in the final round.
Richland's Nick Naglic also won a title, with his coming at 138 pounds.
Conemaugh Township finished an impressive third in the team standings - behind champion Mount Union and second-place Westmont - thanks in part to a strong run by Cory Berchick. The senior 152-pounder pinned all five of his opponents, including Westmont's Tanner Patton in the final round.
The good start could go a long way toward erasing a rough end to Berchick's junior season, according to Township coach Jarod Feathers. I talk more about that in Sunday's edition of The Tribune-Democrat.
I also wrote about the impressive championship performances by Ligonier Valley's Justin and Josh Patrick. I won't go into the full details here, but there's plenty more about the tournament in the paper and online.
If you're looking for my video highlights from Saturday, you'll have to be patient. I didn't get to it Saturday night, but it should be posted sometime Sunday morning.
