Tuesday night recap

Of the two "big" matches from Tuesday night, Bedford's trip to North Star lived up to the hype; Cambria Heights at Westmont Hilltop wasn't nearly as good.

Bedford 34, North Star 31

The Cougars nearly pulled off the upset against there traditional wrestling rival, but Tanner Williams came up with a fall in the final bout at 152 pounds to seal the victory for Bedford. I went to the WH-CH match instead, but the Daily American's Jeff Maurer covered the match. In Maurer's story, Bedford coach Brian Creps says the turning point came in the first match, where Josiah Koontz beat Tanner Revak at 160.
Nick Roberts beat Garrett Thomas 16-2 in a matchup of big names at 120.
Both teams were shorthanded, as North Star was without Lance Shawley and Luke Lepley. But Bedford took an even bigger hit, as the Bisons forfeited at 220 because, according to what I've been told, Jacob Krupa is still recovering from a knee from football season. Given Krupa's track record and experience, that would seem to have been at least a nine-point swing, if not 12.

Westmont Hilltop 51, Cambria Heights 21

I thought this might be a good dual, but the Hilltoppers rolled over the Highlanders. You can read my article on the match here.

Just a note, my wife shot photos of the match last night and asked me to email them to the office for her. When I did, I sent the wrong one, which is why the picture in the paper is of Ryan Burnheimer and says its Mike Walsh. Totally my fault. The online version now has a picture of Logan Blackburn and Ryan Dupas, which turned out to be the highlight of the night.

Blackburn beat Dupas, a defending District 6 champ, 1-0 thanks to a third-period escape. All but 30 seconds of the match was spent in the neutral position. Cambria Heights fans were clamoring for stalling calls on Blackburn, but Dupas really wasn't mounting much offense either. He was going forward the whole time but took a limited number of shots. Blackburn actually came close to a takedown on a couple of occasions, both of them counters on the boundary line. Dupas nearly won it at the buzzer with a desperation headlock, but Blackburn rolled through and they ended up in neutral at the end of the match.
The other highlight was Mike Walsh's 16-11 victory over Brad Thomas at 132. Walsh was dominant early, building a 15-3 lead over a very tough opponent in Thomas. Needing to go big in the third, Thomas did. First he came up with a bear hug for a takedown, then hit a cement mixer that nearly resulted in a fall. Walsh managed to get off his back and escape with the victory.
Westmont doesn't have long to celebrate the win - the Hilltoppers head to Bedford on Thursday night, and Cambria Heights has even less time to dwell on the loss. The Highlanders host Somerset tonight in another key LHAC clash.

These are the only scores that I received. The Altoona Mirror has some more scores in its roundup, including Chestnut Ridge 75, Tussey Mountain 6. The most interesting one I didn't have was Mount Union 46, Northern Bedford 21.
