Analysis: The big guys have carried Westmont Hilltop to a 9-2 record this season, but Matt Beaujon's squad had to rely on the lightweights for this victory.
The Hilltoppers outscored BEA 28-6 from 106 though 152. Two forfeits helped of course, but so did big victories by Drake Dorian and Stephen Zipf as well as Ian Helsel's double-overtime win over Matt Dillon at 145. Tanner Patton also turned in an impressive 4-0 win over Tyler Baney. Throw in the usual victories by Ryan Burnheimer and Josh Duplin and the Hilltoppers are headed back to Tyrone for the semifinals on Saturday.

Analysis: Somerset locks up the No. 2 seed in the District 5 Class AA dual-meet tournament with the victory. The Golden Eagles will host No. 7 Northern Bedford on Thursday. The loss assures North Star of the sixth seed and a trip to No. 6 Chestnut Ridge on Thursday.
As for Tuesday's action, it often had the feeling of a college match - and that's not necessarily a compliment. As so often is the case in college matches, this was determined from the neutral position. There were plenty of close matches - nine decisions, two pins, two forfeits and an injury default - that weren't always exciting. A big crowd was on hand, but the gym was often very quiet.
Somerset had a 14-6 edge in takedowns, which went a long way toward the dual-meet win for the injury-ravaged Golden Eagles. Although each team recorded a pin, Somerset didn't get a set of backpoints in the final 12 weight classes and North Star had just one all night.
North Star coach Pat Berzonski also wasn't happy with how the Cougars performed, as a whole, at the end of matches.
"A whole lot of third periods that we lost," he said. "I'm absolutely appalled. I mean, one of the hallmarks I think built my career on was always having a lot of gas tank in the third period, and our guys didn't have any gas tank in the third period."
The pure numbers weren't that bad: Somerset won the third period in three matches and North Star won it in two. But the Golden Eagles won the third period in the first three matches, each of them Somerset wins, and two of them in dramatic fashion.
Jon Baer trailed 3-1 in the third at 195 pounds before outscoring Max Strasiser 9-1 in the final 1:55. Patrick Blough scored a third-period escape, then went to rideout with Brett Benedict at 220 pounds before scoring three backpoints for a 5-2 victory.
The formula for Somerset throughout most of the night was get a takedown or two in the first and second periods and avoid going on the mat with the Cougars whenever possible.
Somerset built a 27-9 lead before forfeiting two of the final four matches because of injuries to Josh Darr and Jacob Nickelson.
"We're still sore from the weekend and prior weekend," Somerset coach Brian Barron said. "These guys know we're hurting, sore, but you still have to come out and work together as a team and pick up as many points as you can when you can."
Barron said he hopes that his wrestlers will be healthy by Thursday but that his main concern is making sure they are ready for the individual postseason tournaments.

Analysis: Talk about saving the best for last - John Blankenship vs. Ross Inzana was the matchup of the night. And, judging by the score, it looks like it was worth the wait. I've heard that Blankenship is dropping to 160 - which will make an unbelievable District 6 bracket with Forest Hills' Cody Law and Central Cambria's Tony Risaliti also in the mix. Good to see that Cambria Heights got some of its injured starters back, including Ryan Dupas. The Highlanders will need all hands on deck for tomorrow night's trip to Mount Union in what has turned into a bit of a grudge match with the top-seeded Trojans in the District 6 Class AA duals. Jake Beach and Tyler Oliver looks like it was a decent matchup at 195 pounds, as was Dalton Waksmunski and Miles Stahl at 160.

First Period 

Stars and studs: Chestnut Ridge 113-pounder Trent Crouse was the talk of the Thomas tournament and almost certainly would have walked away with the Outstanding Wrestler award if they'd given one. That's what happens when you're the sixth seed, dominate a returning state placewinner in the semifinals like Crouse did to Beth-Center's Zach Swarrow, then knock off another PIAA medalist in Bedford's Ryan Easter in the finals. It capped a strange eight-day period for Crouse. He was one of the heroes in Chestnut Ridge's victory over Somerset in the Richland Coaches Duals, as he pinned Damian Jano to clinch the title, then lost to Jano a few days later when the Golden Eagles got revenge. ... Cambria Heights 126-pounder Joe Davis has flown under the radar somewhat this season. The spotlight doesn't shine on Patton that often, and when it does, it's often focused on teammate Ryan Dupas. Part of the problem is that there aren't that many highly ranked 126-pounders in the area for Davis to prove himself against, but he's 20-1 this season after beating Bedford's Toby Brett for the Thomas title, with his lone loss coming to Hempfield's Joey Allesandro. ... Conemaugh Township 145-pounder Tanner Cahill had a rough calendar year in 2011. He didn't make it to states during his sophomore season after qualifying as a freshman, broke his arm in summer wrestling, then suffered a season-ending injury in football season. He was back in time for the start of wrestling season, but he just now looks to be hitting his stride and getting his wind back. His 11-7 decision of Tri-Valley's Blake Bowman in the Thomas finals shows he might be back to the promising form he showed as a freshman.

Upset-minded: There were plenty of candidates at the Thomas tournament, but can this really go to anyone other than Conemaugh Township's Kris Knotts? He entered the tournament at the No. 15 seed with a 5-2 record, in large part because he hadn't been able to break into the Indians' lineup. After pinning Mount Pleasant's Andy Yoder in a pigtail match, he stunned second-seeded Kody Osselburn of Northern Garrett, who was a state placewinner in Maryland last season. Conemaugh Township coach Jarod Feathers called Knotts a "match-changer" because he has the ability to be on his back one second and put his opponent on his back the next. Unfortunately for Knotts, he couldn't continue the streak, as he was pinned by Richland's Nick Naglic and Beth-Center's Jason Stay to fall a match short of placing. But that doesn't take away from his victory over Osselburn.

Second Period

On deck: Another week, another great slate for area wrestling. In addition to the District 6 duals, which begin today at Westmont and West Branch, there's plenty of intrigue in North Star, where the Cougars will host Somerset in a match that will go a long way in shaping the District 5 bracket.

The duals really heat up on Wednesday, with Cambria Heights at Mount Union in what should be much more interesting than your normal 8 vs. 1 match, giving all of the storylines surrounding it. Plus, Richland makes its first appearance in the duals under coach Tom Smith when the Rams visit Huntingdon.
District 5's quarterfinals will be held on Thursday in what is easily the most hotly contested race in the history of the event.
Saturday brings the championships in Districts 5 and 6. District 5 will be at Bedford, assuming the Bisons get past their quarterfinal opponent - which is no sure thing if it happens to be a bad matchup like Berlin Brothersvalley - while District 6 will make its customary trip to Tyrone for the semifinals and finals.

Third Period

Duals debate: Because it's an individual sport, wrestling has been able to avoid much of the controversy that surrounds college football and college basketball. No haggling about BCS standings or bubble teams here. Just solve it on the mat. You think you're better than me? Prove it.
Of course, there have been some heated debates over the years about who's the No. 1 seed in a tournament or whether Kid A should have to face Guy B in the first round, but it all comes out in the wash, as the saying goes. If you're good enough, you can fight  your way through the bracket and win a title.
At least that was the case when it was just about individual wrestling.
While entertaining and engaging for fans, the dual meet championships have brought the seamier side of sports to the mat. It's not so simple any more. We can't just throw everybody into a gym, roll out the mats and determine who's best anymore. There are too many teams to allow into the dual-meet tournaments.
Now we have to determine which teams belong. And how do we go about doing that? Do we credit teams for all of the dual meets they wrestle - like District 6 does - even if that means piling up victories against the Weak Sisters of the Poor in dual-meet tournaments? Or do we go with the District 5 system, which says that Somerset's victory over Chestnut Ridge last week counts, but that the Lions' win over the Golden Eagles three days earlier doesn't?
Do we go by opponents' winning percentage or total wins? Do Class AAA wins count for more than Class AA ones, even if the AA team is better than its big-school counterpart?
And that's not even thinking about a scenario like what happened with the District 6 Class AA dual-meet tournament last weekend. That's when things get really ugly. Cambria Heights wanted out of the duals, in part because the Highlanders don't really have much of a chance to beat Mount Union. Claysburg-Kimmel could possibly beat the Trojans in a dual but won't find out unless Cambria Heights drops out. CH coach Mike Eckenrode gives CK's Dave Marko the opportunity to prove his team's worth, as the Highlanders tell District 6 that would like to opt out of the tournament. That's all well and good until word reaches the D6 offices that Marko talked Eckenrode into giving up the spot - which both coaches flatly deny - and the district says Cambria Heights has to wrestle or Mount Union receives a forfeit.
No talking to the coaches, no concern for the wrestlers or what's best for the district, just a decision that Cambria Heights didn't opt out in a timely manner - even though there's never been policy like this before and no one says what a "timely manner" is, just that it's less than it took Cambria Heights to decide.
What the BCS - oops, I mean district - says goes. No matter what.
But, at least we can crown a team champion. And then do it again a few weeks later at the individual tournament, even if it's a different team.

Thomas Tournament recap

Great weekend of wrestling in Bedford. Thanks to all of you that stopped by the chat and live streaming video broadcast of it. I mean to comment on the tournament on Sunday, but didn't get a chance to because I spent so much time on the controversy that surrounded the District 6 duals. You can read all about it on The Tribune-Democrat.

With the demands of the live chat and the newspaper coverage, I also didn't get a chance to shoot much video at the tournament (a Webcam was just pointed at the mat for the streaming video) but I did get some post-tournament interviews on video. I'll post them here, but they take awhile to upload.

Weight to watch: 152 pounds. How's this for depth: Wolf Otten, a District 5 champion last season and 100-match winner, is the 12th seed. Tri-Valley's Ty Schoffstall is sixth in the Pennsylvania Wrestling Rankings, Conemaugh Township's Cory Berchick is 10th, Somerset's Josh Darr is 20th and Shade's Wolf Otten is 21st. Off the Mat rankings doesn't include Darr or Otten, but has Blairsville's Drew Doak at No. 12 and Bedford's Tanner Williams at No. 16. Even the early rounds should have good matchups here.

Name to know: At this point in the season, it's hard to come up with someone that is still an unknown but can still do some damage. The closest I can come is Blairsville's Drew Doak. He's a freshman 152-pounder, which is a tough weight to break in at, and he's in what I see as the tournament's toughest weight class. But he's 24-4 on the season, with losses to Cody Copeland - the top 152-pounder in Class AA - Conemaugh Township's Cory Berchick and two state-ranked AAA wrestlers from District 7. Doak's already beaten fifth-seeded Matt Sollenberger of Northern Bedford, but the sixth seed might be to his benefit, as it would keep him away from Tri-Valley's Schoffstall until the finals.

Analysis: Big upset here - one so big I initially thought maybe Penn Cambria's NWCA page was wrong. Henry Scholosser beat Zack Pinkas 11-4 at 182 pounds. Pinkas is 20-4 and 17th in the latest edition of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Rankings while Schlosser is 12-14. Not only did Schlosser win, but he did it convincingly. I'd rank this as possibly the biggest upset of the season so far. Other than that, the one thing that jumps out at me is that there were a lot of good kids that just didn't get matched up. Look at the list of winners from 132 to 160: Kenny Corle, Nick Szala, R.J. Brydon, Jon Stoy and Cody Law. That's an impressive group. Unfortunately, none of them wrestled each other.

Analysis: Bill Bassett has a nice team in Greater Johnstown that doesn't get much attention. Gervon Simon and Malcolm Harris are two of the better wrestlers in the area. I'm actually a little surprised this was as close as it was. Central Cambria got on a nice run in the low- to middleweights to keep the Red Devils in the match.

Analysis: Big win for the Mustangs. I still haven't gotten to see much of them, but I haven been hearing about how much improved they are, and the results are beginning to show it. I'm looking forward to the first WestPAC tournament and how wrestlers like Chase Fox fare.

We didn't get a report from this match, which is a shame because Shade's Wolf Otten was in a position to get his 100th win, which would make him the first Panther (even though he attends Windber) to reach the milestone. Unless he bumped up to 160 pounds, he likely would have gotten it via forfeit.

Analysis: Fantastic match. For those of you who missed it, check out the video highlights at The Tribune-Democrat. (Even if you did see it, please check it out. The way to convince my superiors that more video coverage is warranted is by showing them impressive numbers). There were plenty of surprises to me, including the fact that Somerset put such a scare into Bedford. I missed the North Star match, so this was the first time I've seen Bedford get tested this season.
Nothing too surprising early on. I thought Tanner Williams might beat Josh Darr at 152 pounds. Williams is probably the most improved wrestler I've seen this year. Big surprise at 160 pounds. Having seen both wrestlers face Chestnut Ridge's Bradie Bollman, I thought Josiah Koontz might be able to beat Michael Sutton. But he couldn't stop Sutton's throw-by and was losing 7-3 in the third when he tried an ill-fated Granby that led to Sutton pinning him.
Jacob Nickelson also surprised me. I'd seen him face some top competition (Westmont Hilltop's Ryan Burnheimer and United's John Blankenship) and have almost no offense. But he showed plenty of firepower early against Yingling, building a 7-0 lead in the first before cruising to an 11-4 victory.
After that, things went pretty much as expected, although the 106 was a toss-up. It also was a thrilling match. Again, watch the video and listen to the crowd erupt when Garret Foster puts Jake Warren on his back in overtime.

Analysis: Westmont, which is in District 6 Class AAA, roughed up one of the better teams in District 6 AAA. No huge surprises, but Tanner Patton's 9-5 decision of Bobby Thompson at 160 pounds is a good win. Eric Kowalewski also had a solid performance, beating an 18-match winner in Alex Tripodis. Westmont's Mike Walsh wrestled a tight match with Noah Tarr, who is 25-1 on the season.

Analysis: I didn't get this box score on this one - I found it on Ridge's NWCA site - so I'm not sure at what weight it started. Ridge dominated the lightweigths but Township got rolling in the middleweights. Some good matches - like Cory Berchick's 8-2 win over Bradie Bollman at 160, Kyle Drenner's 9-5 decision of Dan Albright at 195 and Luke Fochtman's 3-1 overtime victory over Luke Gindlesperger at 220. Nick Holsopple's 8-1 victory over Austin Buttry surprised me at 285. I know Holsopple is a solid wrestler, but that's a big win.

There were plenty of good dual meets on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it to any of them. That's too bad because the Chestnut Ridge-Somerset match looks like it was as good or better than its predecessor three days ago in the championship of the Richland Coaches Duals.

Analysis: I really thought the outcome might be different than the meeting in Richland on Saturday night, but I wouldn't have guess how much different the individual matches would be. After getting pinned in the final match at Richland, Damian Jano turned the tables on Trent Crouse. That was a 12-point swing and got the Golden Eagles rolling as they won seven of the next eight matches. Sheldon Wagner also avenged a loss. He beat Colby Hillegass, who had pinned him in their first meeting. Jon Fabian became the second consecutive Somerset wrestler to beat defending District 5 champion Shane Pfaunmiller. That helped the Eagles build a 29-12 lead, and they'd need all of it, as the Lions won four consecutive matches.

 Luke Fochtman, who lost 3-2 to Patrick Blough on a locking-hands call in rideout on Saturday, won by the same score on Thursday to give Ridge a 30-29 edge.

On Saturday, Austin Buttry propelled the Lions to victory by pinning previously unbeaten Jake Hayman at heavyweight. This time, Hayman got to be the hero. His 3-1 victory gave Somerset the victory and a boost in the District 5 dual-meet standings, which doesn't count Saturday's result (or anything else that happens in a dual-meet tournament).

Analysis: Berlin was coming off a very strong showing at the Richland Coaches Duals, but the Mountaineers were nearly outwrestled by the Mustangs. Throw out the four forfeits that Portage gave up and this is a 30-24 on the mat. This is actually beginning to look like a trend, so maybe Adam Whetstone is building something in Portage. Chase Fox, who knocked off Tevin Mostoller last week, added another quality win by beating Eric Darr at 138 pounds. Paul Husar and Donny Watters added a pair of impressive first-period pins for Portage. Husar beat Bryce Fochtman while Watters stopped Trace Heffner, wrestlers with 17 and 16 wins, respectively. Then, Randy Wisen scored a 10-2 major decision over Andre Dauphinais at 182. Dauphinais might be a first-year wrestler, but he's proved difficult to score on, as Wisen found out in his 4-1 victory at the Sheetz Holiday Classic in December.

I haven't gotten to see much of the Mustangs this season, but it certainly looks like they're showing improvement under Whetstone.

The Mountaineers can take something away from the trip - a .500 record in matches that count toward the District 5 standings and makes them eligible for the postseason - but it also can be seen as another step backward in what has been a startlingly inconsistent season.

Analysis: This is a big win for North Star because, I believe, it guarantees the Cougars will be eligible for the District 5 Dual-Meet Tournament. There were some good matchups in it, mainly in the light-to-middle weights. Tanner Hetrick's match with Tayte Mostoller was a bit of a surprise to me, not so much because Hetrick won, but because he did it with a fall in less than a minute. Stephen McKenzie's 7-2 victory over Tevin Mostoller at 132 would have been another highlight match for me. And North Star's Luke Lepley seems to be making strides, as he beat Seth Deist at 138 after losing to him earlier in the season. Jeff Maurer covered it for the Daily American.

Analysis: Another big win for Bedford, but it was actually a pretty good showing by Johnstown as well. The three victories in a row at 132, 138 and 145 were impressive for the Trojans. Malcolm Harris is a proven commodity and Evan Smith and William Leeth are starting to show their skills as well. At this point, it's hard to say much more about Bedford. The Bisons certainly didn't seem to be looking ahed to tonight's big match at Somerset.

Analysis: For two squads with losing records, this had some great matchups. How about 170 pounds, where the state's two best 160-pounders - according to the Pennsylvania Wrestling Rankings - met for the second time this season? Law beat his frequent club practice partner for the second time in a match that went a long way in the team standings. Triston Law, Cody's younger brother, also had a big win for the Rangers. The freshman moved up a weight class and scored a major decision over Brad Taylor, who already has 21 wins this season. But Forest Hills didn't win all of the marquee matchups. Central Cambria's Ben Rager scored a major decision over another very solid wrestler in Kenny Corle at 138 pounds.

Analysis: Not too much to analyze here, with only six matches being wrestled. Like some box scores I've seen this season, this seems like a long way to travel - about an hour and a half by bus - for six matches, four of which lasted a combined 4:18. Duals like this are certainly an argument for keep the dual-meet tournament format. As far as the matches that did happen, no major surprises as far as I see it.

Analysis: The match that everyone wanted to see didn't happen. Sure, John Rizzo has wrestled Josh Duplin about 300 times over the past three seasons, but who's going to complain about seeing two of the area's best wrestlers at any weight square off? Don Shovestull looks to have acquitted himself quite well against Rizzo, however. At this point, anyone who last six minutes with Rizzo gains attention. It's also got to help Rizzo somewhat, as he'll need to get used to the pace of a full match as the postseason rolls around. As far as what did happen, there weren't too many surprises in my eyes. Maybe Adam George's victory over Drake Dorian at 106 pounds, but I probably would have seen that as a toss-up anyway.

Analysis: Sadly, some of the top wrestlers here didn't get a match. Just a guess, but I'm thinking that Justin Patrick probably weighed in at 106 and bumped up to 113 to try to get a match. But Marion Center likely countered by bumping Isaac Stewart up to 120. Marion Center's Brandon Heberling, who is 18-3 on the season, also got a forfeit at 126. No word on why MC's Phil Crook wasn't in the lineup. Ligonier Valley had a very solid showing in the other weights.

Analysis: Today's edition of The Tribune-Democrat says this was wrestled on Monday but since I had it on the schedule for Tuesday and it wasn't reported before there, it's staying here. I haven't seen too much of either team, so I don't know who would have been favored in a lot of the matchups. What does jump out at me is the fact that two of United's best wrestlers - John Blankenship and Ben Mountan - weren't in the lineup. Mountan hasn't wrestled since December. Blankenship did at the Richland Duals. Nolan Paronish has quietly put together a solid season for Northern Cambria, as he's now 14-3.

The Semifinal 1/23/2012

First Period

Stars and studs: I've seen some people on message boards taking shots at the Richland Coaches Duals for a perceived lack of quality, but champion Chestnut Ridge stacks up favorably against just about any team in District 5 or 6. The Lions staged a furious rally to beat Somerset, which was my pick to win the tournament, and finished ahead of the second-, third-, fourth-, sixth-, eighth- and ninth-ranked teams in District 6. Doesn't sound all that weak to me. ... The same poster also took umbrage with the duals by saying that no state qualifiers squared off in the duals. Maybe not, but the big guys certainly put on an impressive display on Saturday. I don't think you'll find anyone in the country, let alone the state, that says Richland 220-pounder John Rizzo isn't a stud. Two state titles, a finals appearance at the Beast of the East and a top-five national ranking virtually guarantee it. But none of those credentials helped him on Saturday, when he was fighting off a determined Jacob Craig of Berlin Brothersvalley. Craig nearly got a tying takedown in the third period in what ended up being a 5-3 Rizzo victory. Craig pushed him as much as any local wrestler has in a couple of years. Craig didn't get to enjoy that performance for long, however. That's because he was beaten by Somerset's Jake Hayman a short time later. Hayman was unbeaten on the year, at least until a few hours later, when he was pinned by Shade's Austin Buttry at heavyweight. Buttry, by the way, is the ultimate underdog. Not the biggest, the fastest or the strongest, he could be the poster boy for the Richland Duals. He's got a huge heart and, as Chestnut Ridge coach Greg Lazor pointed out, he just loves wrestling. Sounds like a quality kid to me.

Upset-minded: Three of the individuals mentioned above could have qualified here, but I'll go with Rizzo's team instead. (That's about the only way he's going to get this award). Richland's coaches took plenty of criticism for the way the pools were drawn up, including some from me. The Rams got some manor of revenge however, as they beat West Branch, which was the top seed in what arguably the toughest pool. After seeing the Warriors and Somerset on Friday night, I wouldn't have given Richland a chance, but coach Tom Smith's team somehow pulled off a 37-35 stunner.

Second Period

On deck: There's something for just about everyone here. Want to see a rematch of one of the best duals of the season? Chestnut Ridge is at Somerset just three days after they met in the finals of the Richland Coaches Duals. Looking for something with serious postseason implications? Check at North Star at Meyersdale, where the Cougars can all but lock up a spot in the District 5 Duals with a victory. Hoping for a matchup of some of the state's best individuals? There's the possibility of John Rizzo wrestling Josh Duplin when Westmont Hilltop visits Richland.
And that's just Tuesday night.
Even with a smaller slate, Wednesday is almost as good. On just about any other night of the year, Conemaugh Township at Chestnut Ridge or Blairsville at Westmont Hilltop could be the marquee event. But Wednesday is all about Bedford at Somerset. The Bisons will be favored by almost anyone not wearing black and orange, but we keep waiting for some team to challenge the Bisons, and this is as good of a chance as any.
Thursday doesn't have the great matchups of the previous two nights, but there could be the chance for some history. If Shade's Wolf Otten wins on Tuesday night, he could become the school's first 100-match winner when the Panthers visit United.
Friday and Saturday should provide a little bit of everything, as one of the highlights of the season arrives with the Thomas tournament in Bedford.

Going live: I held my first live chat of the season last weekend at the Richland Coaches Duals, and it was very popular (especially with the Trent Crouse Fan Club). I'm excited to announce that The Tribune-Democrat will be broadcasting live streaming video and doing a live chat from this weekend's Thomas tournament. I'll provide more info on it as it becomes available. I've done it before for Bfly's website.

Ryan Spring has a complete list of competing teams on the District 5 wrestling website. Ryan also is planning a live chat from Bedford, so you should be able to get your fill of wrestling talk this weekend even if you can't make it in person.
