UPDATED Thursday night recap 1/5

It was a big night on the local schedule, but I didn't make to any of our matches. I caught the first half of the Claysburg Kimmel-Northern Bedford dual, which the Bulldogs dominated. I didn't write about it, but the Altoona Mirror did.

Conemaugh Township 37, Meyersdale 30
170-Gavin Berkley, M, tech. fall Jusdan Griffith, 15-0.
182-Andrew Gowarty, CT, dec. Tyler Mayhugh, 4-3.
195-Kyle Drenner, CT, dec. Andrew Lenhart, 5-1.
220-Luke Gindlesperger, CT, dec. Ty Smith, 3-1.
285-Nick Holsopple, CT, forfeit.
106-Brady McKenzie, M, forfeit.
113-Ryan Smolk, CT, forfeit.
120-Billy Charlton, M, maj. dec. Mickey Sanders, 11-0.
126-Collin Day, M, pinned Casey Berchick, 3:25.
132-Tanner Hetrick, M, pinned Matt Bridge, 3:33.
138-Stephen McKenzie, M, dec. Taylor Cahill, 4-1.
145-Tanner Cahill, CT, maj. dec. Seth Deist, 18-8.
152-Ryan Grosik, CT, pinned Drew Yoder, 3:02.
160-Cory Berchick, CT, pinned Billy Dunbar, 3:02.

Analysis: I'm sorry I missed this one. Sounds like a good one. Withouth breaking down matchups, I would have picked Meyersdale to win. I would have been wrong.
The Indians got two forfeits to the Red Raiders' one, which obviously helps, but coach Jarod Feathers' squad got some key wins in critical spots. The upperweights really came through for CT. Andrew Gowarty's 4-3 victory over Tyler Mayhugh at 182 was big. So was Luke Gindlesperger's 3-1 win over Ty Smith at 220. But the biggest win, in my mind, came at 195 pounds. After watching Andrew Lenhart reach the semifinals at Southmoreland last week, I would have penciled him in for a win over Kyle Drenner.
Again, I would have been wrong.
I would have thought that Meyersdale senior Stephen McKenzie might have been in line for bonus points at 138, where he faced Township freshman Taylor Cahill, but McKenzie only managed a 4-1 decision.
What's more impressive is that the Indians did it without Kody Ofsanko, who got sick in school yesterday and missed the match.
Here's a link to the Daily American's coverage of the match.

Somerset 44, Forest Hills 23
152-Josh Darr, S, maj. dec. Warren Gramling, 10-1.
160-Michael Sutton, S, pinned Jeff Leach, 1:52.
170-Zach Pinkas, FH, pinned Logan Eller, 5:18.
182-Jacob Nickelson, S, pinned Brock Peracchino, :27.
195-Jon Baer, S, forfeit.
220-Patrick Blough, S, pinned Matt Marra, 1:19.
285-Sam Michuk, FH, forfeit.
106-No match.
113-Triston Law, FH, maj. dec. Damian Jano, 10-2.
120-Sheldon Wagner, S, maj. dec. Jake Keiper, 15-2.
126-Tyler Walker, S, forfeit.
132-Kenny Corle, FH, dec. Jon Fabian, 7-5.
138-Mike Laue, S, pinned Ean Bopp, 1:50.
145-R.J. Brydon, FH, maj. dec. Landon Lohr, 10-1.
Records: Somerset 5-1. Forest Hills 1-5.

Analysis: The final score is closer than I would have thought, but that's because the Golden Eagles were without heavyweight Jake Hayman (educational trip) and 106-pounder Garret Foster (illness). That's at least another six points for the forfeit Foster would have received and likely a 9- to 12-point swing at heavyweight. So it easily could have been 56-17.
With that being said, there were some interesting matchups. R.J. Brydon just continues to impress. Despite having to alter his style after tearing the ligaments in his thumb, Brydon has been solid. I thought Landon Lohr might test him, but a 10-1 major seems decisive.
Triston Law isn't a huge 106-pounder, so moving up to 113 an majoring Jano is a good win. So is Kenny Corle's 7-5 victory over Jon Fabian.

Westmont 51, Central Cambria 18
126-Colton Makin, CC, dec. Nick Mical, 11-4.
132-Ben Rager, CC, pinned Justin Mills, 1:01.
138-Mike Walsh, WH, pinned Cordale Kline, 4:19.
145-Travis Kushner, WH, pinned Kevin Bednar, 3:17.
152-Ian Helsel, WH, pinned Tanner Bilonick, 1:01.
160-Tony Risaliti, CC, pinned Jonah Cramer 1:41.
170-Colin Barron, WH, dec. Cody Slebodnik 2-1.
182-Noah McQuillan, WH, dec. Calvin Crow, 10-7.
195-Eric Kowalewski, WH, pinned Jordan O’Farrell, :20.
220-Don Shovestull, WH, pinned Luke Zearing, 3:32.
285-Josh Duplin, WH, pinned Evan Sokira, :50.
106-Devon Gilbert, WH, forfeit.
113-Brad Taylor, CC, dec. Drake Dorian 8-1.
120-Stephen Zipf, WH, dec. Cameron Long 9-5.
Records: Westmont Hilltop 4-1; Central Cambria 3-8.

Analysis: The biggest surprise here is how the Westmont Hilltop lineup looks. The Hilltoppers were without three of their top wrestlers in Logan Blackburn, Tanner Patton and Ryan Burnheimer for a variety of reasons. All three should be back by next week, but their services weren't required to beat Central Cambria. Westmont bumped some wrestlers around to lessen the impact, and Noah McQuillan was even able to get a win in Burnheimer's normal spot.

Bedford 51, Cambria Heights 21
182-Tyler Crawford, CH, pinned Dylan Evans, 2:33.
195-Michael Brett, B, forfeit.
220-Jacob Krupa, B, forfeit.
285-Aaron Gill, CH, pinned Justin Easter, 3:24.
106-Jake Warren, B, pinned Michael Dautlick, 1:19.
113-Ryan Easter, B, maj. dec. Ryan Dupas, 12-2.
120-Garrett Thomas, B, pinned Jeff Brahim, :46.
126-Joe Davis, CH, dec. Toby Brett, 14-7.
132-Brad Thomas, CH, dec. Caleb Grimes, 8-1.
138-Zack Dudek, B, pinned Levi Niebauer, :59.
145-Jesse Martin, B, pinned Mark Zabinsky, 3:00.
152-Tanner Williams, B, pinned Travis Yahner, 4:56.
160-Josiah Koontz, B, tech. fall Dalton Waksmunski, 20-3.
170-Ross Inzana, CH, dec. Cody Yingling, 11-6.

Analysis: The Bisons just keep rolling along and posting lopsided wins. Despite the score, there were some interesting matchups here. Ryan Easter beating Ryan Dupas 12-2 wasn't a huge suprise - Easter beat him 10-2 last season - but it's still impressive. Cambria Heights got a good win at 126, where Joe Davis beat Toby Brett 14-7.

Richland 57, Penn Cambria 19
170-Eli Metzgar, R, forfeit.
182-Henry Schlosser, PC, pinned Mike Merryman, 4:29.
195-Killian Snopko, R, forfeit.
220-John Rizzo, R, pinned John Wilkinson, :15.
285-Seth McClendon, PC, dec. Matt Moose, 7-1.
106-Adam George, R, forfeit.
113-Steven Rouser, R, pinned Nathan Gates, 5:02.
120-Justin Cinko, R, forfeit.
126-Marcus McKool, R, pinned Zack Rhone-Hatch, :43.
132-Michael Eckenrode, PC, pinned Eric Seth, 1:17.
138-Nick Szala, PC, maj. dec. Nick Naglic, 13-2.
145-Trevor Henry, R, pinned Matt Wyland, 5:43.
152-Mario Rizzo, R, pinned Henry Spangler, 3:23.
160-Nico Pecora, R, dec. Jon Stoy, 3-2.

Analysis: Some interesting matches here. Nick Szala continued his fine form with a 13-2 major decision of Nick Naglic and Richland got a nice in at 160, where Nico Pecora edged Jon Stoy 3-2. Penn Cambria's Seth McClendon is having a solid season, including his 7-1 victory over Matt Moose at heavyweight.

Portage 52, Shade 18
106-No match.
113-Joseph Pakstis, S, forfeit.
120-Nick Lutz, P, pinned Mike Manges, 4:50.
126-Jonathan Reynolds, S, forfeit.
132-Chase Fox, P, pinned David Dietz, :47.
138-Caleb Kephart, P, forfeit.
145-Shane Baker, P, maj. dec. James Kostick, 14-4.
152-James Otten, S, pinned Paul Husar, 1:43.
160-Donny Watters, P, pinned Bradley Godin, :31.
170-Randy Wisen, P, pinned Phil Aikey, 2:39.
182-Kyle Davis, P, forfeit.
195-Cameron Neel, P, forfeit.
285-Tyler Strong, P, pinned Michael Ohler, 1:28.

Analysis: Not too much to talk about here. Only seven matches were wrestled and only one - 145 - went the distance. I still don't know too much about these teams, as Portage doesn't usually report its scores and Shade has only wrestled four matches. James Otten improved to 4-0 with a pin over Paul Husar, who was 10-3, according to Portage's NWCA page. The Mustangs' Chase Fox improved to 9-6, which doesn't sound that impressive, but his losses are to Central Cambria's Ben Rager, Claysburg-Kimmel's James Dodson, Meyersdale's Stephen McKenzie, Forest Hills' Kenny Corle (twice) and Corry's Levi Catalfu. That's a pretty tough group and Fox was able to hang with some of them.
