Richland Coaches Duals wrap-up 1/22

Whew. A very busy weekend kept me from doing any blogging. Hopefully everyone that was interested was able to check out my live chat from the Richland Coaches Duals. You can read my story about it on The Tribune-Democrat website.
I certainly don't have the time to analyze all of the 112 dual meets that were wrestled over the weekend. In fact, I couldn't even get the results of all of them from Richland. The placement matches wrestled in the East Hills Recreation building - the bottom 12 teams - were never reported. I've managed to find the links to NWCA box scores for almost all of the scores that I have. It was a very time-consuming process, so I'm hoping at least some of you click on them!

195-Dan Albright, CR, dec. Jon Baer, 8-7.
220-Patrick Blough, S, dec. Luke Fochtman, 3-2 (RO).
285-Austin Buttry, CR, pinned Jake Hayman, 3:15.
106-Derrick Claar, CR, maj. dec. Garret Foster, 9-0.
113-Trent Crouse, CR, pined Damian Jano, 1:49.
Records: Chestnut Ridge 22-4. Somerset 14-2.

Analysis: For those of you that followed the chat, there were plenty of things that surprised me. First off, I thought Somerset was a slight favorite. Those feelings didn't diminish any when Mike Laue beat Shane Pfaunmiller, which was a definite surprise. I also was wrong on three straight matches on the upperweights. Dan Albright hung on for a close win over Jon Baer at 195 and Patrick Blough beating Luke Fochtman at 220 pounds in the rideout. But the biggest surprise - literally and figuratively - came at 285 pounds. I've said before that I really like how Austin Buttry wrestles, but I thought unbeaten Jake Hayman would be too much for him. Boy was I wrong. Not only did Buttry get a first-period takedown, he went from being in a cradling to pinning Hayman in a dual-shifting bout. After that, it was up to Ridge's lightweights to win it, and they did.

  2. Who's knocking them? Very good weekend from the Trojans. I said at the beginning of the year that I thought they were going to beat Forest Hills, possibly for the first time since restarting the wrestling program, before injuries and other issues took a toll on the team. As you said, Gervon Simon is back and Johnstown is as good as it's been in years.
