Monday night recap

There was only one match on the schedule for Monday night and I thought it might be a pretty decent one. Westmont Hilltop had other ideas, beating Central Cambria 55-13.

Westmont Hilltop 55, Central Cambria 13
120-Clayton Dorian, WH, pinned Brad Casper, 3:03.
126-Carnell Andrews, WH, maj. dec. Ian Ostrowski, maj. dec. 15-3.
132-Trent Blackburn, WH, dec. Hunter Kish, 8-5.
138-Tom Opdenhoff, CC, maj. dec. Drake Dorian, 9-0.
145-Nick Mical, WH, pinned Dylan Borsuk, 0:47.
152-Jake Dorian, WH, forfeit.
160-Mark Barbera, WH, pinned Sean Snyder, 0:51.
170-Anthony Walters, WH, dec. Caliber Castel, 6-0.
182-Alex Croft, CC, dec. Jon Roseman, 3-1.
195-Levi Cook, WH, pinned Nathan Kaschalk, 1:51.
220-Hussein Sbeitan, WH, pinned Tom Howell, 1:38.
285-Eric Johncola, WH, dec. Aaron Averi, 3-0.
106-Treazure Toney, WH, forfeit.
113-Max Murin, CC, pinned Derrick Christie, 1:49.
Records: Westmont Hilltop 2-0; Central Cambria 3-4
Analysis: If Carnell Andrews hadn't gotten your attention yet, he certainly should have it now. A 15-3 major decision of Ian Ostrowski, who was 27-6 and a third-place finisher in District 6 last season, certainly got mine. I knew Andrews was good, but this is really impressive.
I was a little surprised that Anthony Walters only beat Caliber Castel 6-0 at 170, although one observer told me that Castel wasn't exactly active.
The final match of the night was also interesting to me. Derrick Christie was off to a 4-0 start to his career, but he stepped up in class in facing Max Murin. The returning state placewinner, who was unhappy with hist title-winning performance at the Sheetz Holiday Classic on Saturday, likely had to be a bit more impressed this time, as he pinned Christie in 1:49.

  1. He beat Ostrowski... STILL a heck of a win!

  2. Oh geez, big error on my part, confusing the CC studs with the last names starting with O! Sorry, Tommy! It has been corrected. Thanks for letting me know!

  3. Andrews will not be tested in this area. I believe he's the best freshman the Somerset, Bedford, Cambria area has! Period!

  4. Bedford had a defending state runner-up wrestling 126 and Ridge has a super frosh of their own at that weight. Glorioso from Huntington is a state placewinner. These are just to name a few. Andrews is for real but there are some really good ones at this weight. Should be some entertaining matches down the road.

  5. Glorioso and Gabriel are the obv front runners at this weight, but I agree as FRESHMAN go, I got to go with Andrews as the best in the area. This is just based on the fact that he navigated the toughest weight in the JH state tournament last year. Also with powerade looming I'm excited to see how some of these youngsters fare.
