Results and analysis from Thursday, 12-11-2014

A look at Thursday night's action:

Cambria Heights 49, Bedford 22
170-Levi Neibauer, CH by forfeit.
182-Daniel Brett, B dec. Dalton Waskmuski 16-9.
195-Dennis Link, CH pinned Braden Crawley 2:59.
220-Anthony Mezzelo, CH pinned Jorge Canales, 3:46.
285-Nate Shoemaker, B dec. Alex Albright 8-4.
106-Hunter Campbell, CH pinned Noah Baughman 5:21.
113-Bryce Campbell, CH pinned Grant Browell :47.
120-M. Kitchen, CH by forfeit.
126-Jonathan Gabriel, B pinned Michael Dautlick 3:15.
132-Kyle Mehle, B pinned Brody Mezzelo 2:43.
138-Kenny Collins, B maj. dec. Ben Williams 20-11.
145-Eric Kuskoski, CH dec. Uriah Costal 3-0.
152-Ben Yahner, CH pinned Jacob Mehle 3:45.
160-Austin Gill, CH maj. dec. Ryan Wertz 11-2.
Records: Bedford 1-1; Cambria Heights 1-0.
Analysis: This was the big dual of the night and, for me, a big surprise. It wasn't necessarily a surprise that Cambria Heights won – the Highlanders have to be considered one of the favorites in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference – but I certainly wouldn't have expected a 27-point victory.
I'm not sure if the result tells us more about Cambria Heights or Bedford. For one thing, I can't recall the last time Bedford forfeited two weights. The first one – at 170 to Levi Niebauer – wasn't a big deal, because if you're going to give up six you want it to be to a state placewinner like Niebauer. The one at 120 is a different story, however. No disrespect to Marshall Kitchen, but he's a freshman, and I'm sure forfeiting to him was difficult for the Bisons.
Hunter Campbell's pin of Noah Baughman at 106 was very big for the Highlanders, and his twin brother's fall at 113 was icing on the cake.
Anthony Mezzelo's pin of Jorge Canales also was big for Cambria Heights. I know that Canales was a PJW state qualifier last year, so he has some talent.
The Highlanders definitely stamped themselves as a team to watch with this big victory.

Central 43, Northern Bedford 30
120: Braeden Swab (CHM) over Trey Childers (NBCH) (Fall 3:42)
126: Brock Biddle (CHM) over Jon Raab (NBCH) (Fall 5:53)
132: Jared Helsley (NBCH) over Ethan Kennedy (CHM) (SV-1 5-3)
138: Bryce Biddle (CHM) over Carter Replogle (NBCH) (Fall 5:04)
145: Nick Hoenstine (CHM) over Ridge Hershberger (NBCH) (Dec 10-4)
152: Jordan Quarello (CHM) over Judah Gochnour (NBCH) (MD 10-2)
160: Collin Ulery (CHM) over Dakota Brunner (NBCH) (Fall 3:47)
170: Jared Smith (CHM) over Dillon Morris (NBCH) (Fall 2:29)
182: Lucas Kolinchak (NBCH) over Mike Mock (CHM) (Dec 2-1)
195: Mason Guyer (NBCH) over Kaleb Gahagan (CHM) (Fall 1:38)
220: Chase Ott (NBCH) over (CHM) (For.)
285: Mitchell Conrath (CHM) over Scott Foor (NBCH) (Fall 1:33)
106: Tristin Guyer (NBCH) over Cameron Ulery (CHM) (Fall 1:33)
113: Zach Clark (NBCH) over (CHM) (For.)
Analysis: I've heard from a few people that Northern Bedford is a team to watch for this year, so this is definitely interesting. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise, as Dave Marko has a solid Central team with four 20-match winners from last year as well as the return of Jordan Quarello. I'm sure Trey Childers getting pinned wasn't the start that Northern Bedford was looking for. The Black Panthers actually won one of the best matches of the night, as Lucas Kolinchak edged Mike Mock at 182.
Actually, on second thought, this might have been a bigger dual than the Cambria Heights-Bedford one, even if it is a bit more off of my radar. Lots of interesting matches here.

North Star 53, Meyersdale 18
152-Tevin Mostoller, NS, pinned Brock Ackerman, 2:16.
160-Gus Strasiser, NS, tech. fall Kendall Swick, 18-2 (5:03).
170-Dillion Charlton, NS, forfeit.
182-Jon Thomas, NS, pinned Tanner Krause, 4:12.
195-Ty Smith, M, dec. Paul Tretter, 7-0.
220-Hunter Connor, NS, forfeit.
285-Brady Vinisky, NS, pinned Dylan Harvey, 1:32.
106-No match.
113-Keaton Furry, NS, pinned Lucas Cornell, 3:30.
120-Dylan Smith, M, forfeit.
126-Brady Gardner, NS, pinned Kyle Sigler, 5:09.
132-Trevor Gnagey, M, forfeit.
138-Shawn Costas, NS, pinned Easton Broadwater, 1:45.
145-Brady McKenzie, M, dec. Michael Baker, 4-1.
Records: North Star 1-0; Meyersdale 0-1.
Anaylsis: This result cements the notions that I had going into it: North Star should be competitive with almost anyone in the area while it could be a long season for Meyersdale. The Red Raiders didn't have Chris Hutzell in their lineup, which was a big loss. (No word at this point on why). Also, I was surprised that Ty Smith only posted a 7-0 victory over Paul Tretter, who is new to me. I know that North Star coach Tim Rosa was pleased with the way that Tretter wrestled against someone as talented and accomplished as Smith.

Richland 38, Greater Johnstown 29
138-Matthew Oppy, GJ, maj dec. Ben Saloga 13-0.
145-Ryan Mikulsky, R, pinned Kristian Flemming 1:43.
152-Dan Verhovsek, R, dec. Ameer Connor 16-14.
160-Exree Loe, GJ, forfeit.
170-Kobe March, GJ, forfeit.
182-Terry Brandon, GJ, forfeit.
195-Jacob Horsley, R, forfeit.
220-Nathan Litvan, GJ, pinned Curtis Hockensmith :26.
285-Killian Snopko, R, pinned Lorenzo Miller :49.
106-Riley Holsinger, R, forfeit.
113-No match.
120-No match.
126-Stephen Rouser, R, pinned Abdullah Battle 5:11.
132-Adam George, R, forfeit.
Records: Richland 1-1; Greater Johnstown Not reported.
Analysis: Not much to write about here. The 152-pound bout between Dan Verhovsek and Ameer Connor looks like it would have been entertaining.

United 57, Portage 15
160-Brady Ratosky, P, pinned Josh Young  1:50.
170-Anthony Michaels, U, pinned Marshall McCabe 1:14.
182-Brent Mack, U, forfeit.
195-Grant Ingalls, U, pinned Jordan Beyer 1:14.
220-Tyler Oliver, U, pinned Quintin Evans :28.
285-Andrew Deitman, U, forfeit.
106-Caleb Walls, U, forfeit.
113-Noah Walls, U, pinned Andrew Kolenovic 1:47.
120-Levi Walls, U, pinned Jesse Husar :42.
126-Warren Lowther, U, dec. Caleb Lutz 5-4.
132-Devon Walker, U, pinned Alex  Gageby 1:13.
138-No match.
145: Bryan Husar, P, forfeit.
152-Nick Lutz, P, dec. Caleb Bracken 6-5.
Records: Not reported.
Analysis: Another one that didn't have many matches that caught my attention. Devon Walker, who won the Conemaugh Township Holiday Tournament, continued his hot start for the Lions. I was surprised that United had two holes in the lineup (138 and 145). I thought they should have a full lineup. Nick Lutz edging Caleb Bracken at 152 should have made for a decent match, as would Warren Lowther's 5-4 victory over Caleb Lutz.

Everett 58, Juniata Valley 21

152
Lee Cogan (Everett Area Hs) over Kyle Geissinger (Juniata Valley Hs) (Fall 2:38)

160
Brent Troutman (Juniata Valley Hs) over Gavin Wills (Everett Area Hs) (TF 17-2 4:03)

170
Wes Graham (Everett Area Hs) over Sam Singer (Juniata Valley Hs) (Fall 2:47)

182
Bailey Eichelberger (Everett Area Hs) over Jesse Jefferis (Juniata Valley Hs) (Fall 0:21)

195
Hunter Houck (Juniata Valley Hs) over Waylon Brennan (Everett Area Hs) (MD 14-5)

220
Zach Claycomb (Everett Area Hs) over Colby Crownover (Juniata Valley Hs) (Fall 1:59)

285
Kyle Peterson (Everett Area Hs) over River Stewart (Juniata Valley Hs) (Fall 1:40)

106
Landon Bambling (Everett Area Hs) over Unknown (For.)

113
Liam Flaherty (Everett Area Hs) over Nathan Janowsky (Juniata Valley Hs) (Fall 2:40)

120
Selena Munoz (Everett Area Hs) over Michael Steiner (Juniata Valley Hs) (Fall 2:14)

126
Hunter Kern (Juniata Valley Hs) over Dalton Klotz (Everett Area Hs) (Fall 2:44)

132
Morgan Thomas (Juniata Valley Hs) over Unknown (For.)

138
Benjamin Stover (Everett Area Hs) over Hunter Norris (Juniata Valley Hs) (Fall 0:31)

145
Mahlon Akers (Everett Area Hs) over Nathan Feagley (Juniata Valley Hs) (MD 13-2)

Analysis: I'm not an expert on either of these teams by any means, but I did find this score on TrackWrestling. It's good to see that the schools, which have struggled with numbers at times in the past, each had a fairly full lineup. Each school has one returning placewinner and they met at 126 pounds, with Juniata Valley's Hunter Kern pinning Dalton Klotz. And Selena Munoz, who proved herself a capable wrestler last year, got a pin for Everett at 120.

Claysburg-Kimmel 36, Southern Huntingdon 34
285: Nick Winfield (SHCH) over Isaac Fleck (CKH) (Fall 5:06)
106: Jordan Muselman (CKH) over Seth Walker (SHCH) (Dec 7-1)
113: Auston Patterson (SHCH) over Liam Lafferty (CKH) (Fall 3:06)
120: Alan Wright (CKH) over (SHCH) (For.)
126: Dakota Walter (CKH) over (SHCH) (For.)
132: Jakob Dodson (CKH) over Laetten Part (SHCH) (Dec 3-0)
138: Quintin Whitsel (SHCH) over Cole Hypes (CKH) (Dec 8-1)
145: James Dunmore (CKH) over Michael Patton (SHCH) (Fall 3:05)
152: Seth Benson (SHCH) over Nikolas Sell (CKH) (Fall 3:43)
160: Scott Walter (CKH) over Warren Benson (SHCH) (Fall 5:00)
170: Tyler Carowick (SHCH) over Dakotah Feathers (CKH) (Fall 3:39)
182: Mason Parks (SHCH) over Jacob Hypes (CKH) (Dec 9-2)
195: Scott Carbaugh (SHCH) over Matthew Walter (CKH) (MD 11-1)
220: Tyler Elder (CKH) over Caleb Gilliland (SHCH) (Fall 0:23)
Anaylsis: A very close dual, but the big surprise for me came at 170 pounds, where Tyler Carowick pinned Dakotah Feathers. Feathers was 18-12 last season, so I would have expected him to be favored over Carowick, who went 9-15. Also of note is the fact that Southern Huntingdon's returning wrestler with the best record (16-6 for Scott Carbaugh) was unable to come up with the pin the Rockets needed at 195.

Mount Union 63, Tussey Mountain 15
145: Shayne Brumbaugh (TMH) over Andrew Tress (MUAH) (Fall 1:55)
160: Nathanael Morgan (MUAH) over Brennen Jones (TMH) (Fall 0:39)
170: Dylan R. Smith (MUAH) over Skyler Brumbaugh (TMH) (Dec 7-3)
182: Braydon Kylor (MUAH) over Justis Dodson (TMH) (DQ)
195: Adam Rigney (MUAH) over Zach Bolinger (TMH) (Fall 0:38)
220: Mason Hockenberry (MUAH) over (TMH) (For.)
285: Teagan Locke (MUAH) over Chris Morales (TMH) (Fall 0:53)
106: Oaklee Brode (TMH) over Josh Boozel (MUAH) (Dec 12-6)
113: Andrew Todaro (MUAH) over Zekiah Baker (TMH) (Fall 1:24)
120: Bryton Stidfole (MUAH) over (TMH) (For.)
126: Brennan Price (TMH) over Caleb Diven (MUAH) (Fall 4:36)
132: Jake Boozel (MUAH) over Wade Gonsman (TMH) (Fall 2:34)
138: Robbie Steel (MUAH) over (TMH) (For.)
152: Drew Harshbarger (MUAH) over Nicholas Foster (TMH) (Fall 2:35)
Analysis: Mount Union might not be loaded with returning district placewinners, but it looks like the Trojans will still have a strong team. The highlight match for me looks like Oaklee Brode's 12-6 decision over Josh Boozel at 106.

Huntingdon 60, Tyrone 18
126: Collin Glorioso (HAH) over Corey Hunter (TAH) (Fall 1:39)
132: Tyler Scott (HAH) over (TAH) (For.)
138: Sage Dixon (TAH) over Trenton Sheaffer (HAH) (Dec 4-1)
145: Ty Snyder (TAH) over Joseph Bailey (HAH) (Dec 8-7)
152: Drew Simpson (HAH) over Jarrod Ulrich (TAH) (Fall 3:07)
160: Jacob Oliver (HAH) over Phoenix Farias (TAH) (Fall 0:29)
170: Jon Wagner (HAH) over (TAH) (For.)
182: Logan Fisher (HAH) over (TAH) (For.)
195: Matt Norris (HAH) over John Chronister (TAH) (Fall 1:22)
220: Tanner Kocik (HAH) over (TAH) (For.)
285: Stevie Colyer (TAH) over Brady Shope (HAH) (Fall 1:22)
106: Michael Cherry (TAH) over Chris Hoover (HAH) (Fall 2:58)
113: Izac Benson (HAH) over Devon Brown (TAH) (Fall 0:30)
120: Warren Shope (HAH) over (TAH) (For.)
Analysis: Huntingdon suffered a lot of losses from last year's squad, but the cupboard is far from bare. Having Collin Glorioso and Jacob Oliver are two pretty good starting points to build a team around. Tyrone's John Chronister had a good tournament in Davidsville last weekend, but he didn't face anyone there as talented as Matt Norris.

Cumberland Valley 53, State College 3
152: Felix Belga (CVH) over Jarred Price (SCAH) (MD 16-2)
160: Jacob Schalles (CVH) over Jonathan Sponsler (SCAH) (MD 9-1)
170: Patrick Duggan (CVH) over William Roeshot (SCAH) (MD 13-4)
182: Trent Cook (CVH) over Bobby Bendik (SCAH) (Fall 1:37)
195: Francis Duggan (CVH) over Cory Dreibelbis (SCAH) (Fall 4:41)
220: Jake Black (CVH) over Pete Haffner (SCAH) (Dec 4-2)
285: Jackson Stanford (CVH) over Jack Vandevort (SCAH) (Dec 6-0)
106: Adam Stover (SCAH) over Russell Zimmerman (CVH) (Dec 9-2)
113: William Kaldes (CVH) over Jacob Pammer (SCAH) (TF 20-3 4:55)
120: Wyatt Long (CVH) over Trey Millward (SCAH) (MD 9-1)
126: Jake Barrick (CVH) over Kyle Catral (SCAH) (Dec 3-0)
132: Cal Reichart (CVH) over Lucas Jennerman (SCAH) (TF 16-0 2:00)
138: Parker Hillard (CVH) over Dalton Barger (SCAH) (Dec 10-3)
145: Quintin Milliken (CVH) over Ian Barr (SCAH) (Dec 5-2)
Analysis: Cumberland Valley is loaded, so this isn't all that surprising. The highlight match definitely looks like Patrick Duggan's 13-4 major decision of William Roeshot at 170. Duggan is a three-time AAA placewinner, although he's made a big jump from 138 to 170. Roeshot was 22-9 a year ago, so he's no slouch. Getting majored by Duggan is nothing to be ashamed of.

Hollidaysburg 40, Penns Valley 34
220: Tevin Pulcine (HAH) over Lucas Sharer (PVAH) (Fall 0:20)
285: Hunter Gill (HAH) over Jared Bressler (PVAH) (Fall 1:00)
106: Darren Yearick (PVAH) over Matthew Hines (HAH) (MD 8-0)
113: Nathan Swartz (HAH) over (PVAH) (For.)
126: Darren Bowser (HAH) over Jason Ticknor (PVAH) (Fall 0:44)
132: Curtis Decker (PVAH) over Dalton Long (HAH) (Fall 2:58)
138: Jared Hurd (PVAH) over Dan Reeve (HAH) (Fall 3:09)
145: Colton Walls (HAH) over Matt Hosterman (PVAH) (Fall 4:34)
152: Isaac Bierly (PVAH) over Aden Myers (HAH) (Fall 1:53)
160: Andrew Hurd (PVAH) over Frank Montecalvo (HAH) (Fall 0:39)
170: Noah Worley (HAH) over Allen Cain (PVAH) (Fall 1:53)
182: Corey Hazel (PVAH) over (HAH) (For.)
195: Braden Curry (HAH) over Corey Rimmey (PVAH) (MD 10-0)
Analysis: Hollidaysburg won the dual, but lost what looks like the most interesting match to me. The Golden Tigers' Dalton Long, who finished fourth in Northwest AAA last season, was pinned by Curtis Decker, a Southwest Class AA third-placewinner.

Mifflin County 50, Central Dauphin East 15
113: Kyle Smith (MCH) over (CDEH) (For.)
120: Noah Myers (MCH) over Eric Chambers (CDEH) (MD 12-3)
126: Jonah Kile (MCH) over Anthony Radic (CDEH) (Dec 7-2)
132: Logan Wise (MCH) over Joseph Vought (CDEH) (Dec 8-7)
138: Trent Hidlay (MCH) over Jordan Simonetti (CDEH) (Fall 3:26)
145: Hayden Hidlay (MCH) over Mahlon Chase (CDEH) (Fall 1:25)
152: Isaac Underhill (MCH) over Joseph Porter (CDEH) (MD 11-3)
160: Noah Stewart (MCH) over Dominic Gonzalez (CDEH) (Fall 3:26)
170: Cevon Nguyen (CDEH) over Brandon Wilson (MCH) (SV-1 3-1)
182: Keith Corson (MCH) over Tyler Moyer (CDEH) (Dec 8-1)
195: Trey Hartsock (MCH) over Sean Fitzkee (CDEH) (Dec 8-3)
220: Jordan Hohney (CDEH) over Austin Haubrick (MCH) (Fall 0:38)
285: Wyatt Renninger (MCH) over John Wallace (CDEH) (Fall 4:44)
106: Nykarri Cunningham (CDEH) over (MCH) (For.)
Analysis: Another big victory for Mifflin County. Cevon Nguyen was CDE's top returning wrestler after going 24-7 last year, but Brandon Wilson pushed him to the limit before losing in overtime.
