Results for Tuesday 12-9-2014

I went to Berlin Brothersvalley's dual meet at Conemaugh Township on Tuesday night. It wasn't the best match on the night, but it was a chance to see my nephew (and what is expected to be one of the top teams in District 5) in action close to home.
Here's the box score:
Berlin Brothersvalley 58, Conemaugh Township 9
182-Storm McDonald, BB, dec. Jake Grosik, 9-5.
195-Toby Cahill, BB, pinned Dylan Drenner, 2:36.
220-Shane Pepper, BB, forfeit.
285-Anthony Collins, BB, forfeit.
106-Gabe Slezak, CT, forfeit.
113-Andrew Hoover, BB, forfeit.
120-Nathan Thomas, CT, dec. Shawn Yanosky, 8-2.
126-Austin Lee, BB, dec. Aaron Griffith, 6-5.
132-Joe Swank, BB, forfeit.
138-Ryan Tressler, BB, pinned John Claycomb, :59.
145-Kane McKenzie, BB, maj. dec. Brandon Stahl, 10-2.
152-No match.
160-Bryce Fochtman, BB, pinned Colton Stahl, :55.
170-Taylor Cahill, BB, forfeit.
Records: Berlin Brothersvalley 1-0; Conemaugh Township 0-1.
Analysis: My expectations might have been a bit too high for the Mountaineers, considering their football season just ended a week and a half ago. Not surprisingly, they didn't look like they were in midseason form. Some of the football players weren't in the lineup and others were clearly not in wrestling shape just yet. Again, that's to be expected. What disappointed me was that Berlin only had 13 wrestlers weigh in. I've heard that a few of their wrestlers - including some that might have been in the lineup at the beginning of the year - have quit. That's not a good sign, and it's hard to see them dethroning Chestnut Ridge at the top of the district without the depth to bump around and get matchups as needed.
The best match was Berlin freshman Austin Lee taking on Township junior Aaron Griffith at 126 pounds. There was a wild scramble in the first period that saw Lee take a 4-3 lead. After he rode out Griffith in the second, Lee was able to come up with a reversal (as seen below) and, after giving up an escape, hold on for the victory.

Also of note was another Berlin freshman, Shawn Yanosky, going up against Nathan Thomas at 120. There were a few nice flurries in this one, but it was scoreless going to the third before Yanosky, who was one of the aforementioned football players, ran out of gas in the third. Thomas took advantage with a pair of takedowns and a set of nearfall points for an 8-2 victory.
Berlin did get a strong third period from Kane McKenzie at 145. He trailed Brandon Stahl 2-0 entering the third, but the Mountaineers senior scored a takedown and three sets of backpoints for a 10-2 major decision.
I was skeptical when I saw that Berlin's Storm McDonald, a 138-pounder, was listed at 182 this season, but after seeing him in person, he certainly has the look of an upper weight, as he seems to have added height and muscle.

Westmont Hilltop 37, Forest Hills 32
132-Carnell Andrews (WH) pinned Evan Wess, 1:52.
138-Triston Law (FH) maj. dec. Trent Blackburn, 18-6.
145-Drake Dorian (WH) maj. dec. Nathan Wingard, 14-3.
152-Josh Gould (FH) dec. Nick Mical, 10-8.
160-Travis Templeton (FH) pinned Jake Dorian, 3:02.
170-Ian Shugars (FH) pinned Jon Roseman, 1:51.
182-Anthony Walters (WH) pined Jake Colbert, 0:53.
195-Eric Elgin (FH) pinned Levi Cook, 2:51.
220-Connor Imler (WH) dec. Hayden Block, 9-6.
285-Hussein Sbeitan (WH) pinned Paul Lauffer, 1:51.
106-Derrick Christie (WH) pinned Gage McCall, 2:17.
113-Jake Keiper (FH) maj. dec. Treazure Toney, 15-3.
120-Tanner McCall (FH) dec. Clayton Dorian, 6-5.
126-Braden Rosemas (WH) forfeit.
Analysis: This looks like it would have been a good one to see. In a five-point match, plenty of things could be key. Derrick Christie getting a fall at 106 was big for Westmont, but Jake Keiper came back with a key major decision over Treazure Toney at 113. Tanner McCall's 6-5 victory over Clayton Dorian looks like it was probably a good one. Maybe the biggest key to the match was Westmont's ability to get a forfeit at 126 for Braden Rosemas instead of Carnell Andrews.

Penn Cambria 48, Richland 24
182-Jacob Driskel (PC) forfeit.
195-Braden St. Clair (PC) forfeit
220-Darion Conrad (PC) pinned Curtis Hockensmith, 2:37.
285-Killian Snopko (R) pinned Jacob Wineland, :42.
106-Riley Holsinger (R) dec. Garrett Rager, 7-2.
113-No match.
120-Nolan Link (PC) forfeit
126-Stephen Rouser (R) maj. dec. Jarred Stoy, 12-2.
132-Adam George (R) tech. fall Kamryn Bryant, 19-4 (4:00).
138-Zach Stevens (PC) pinned Ben Saloga, 4:35.
145-Michael Eckenrode (PC) pinned Ryan Mikulsky, 1:36.
152-Dan Verhovsek (R) pinned Jacob Wilkinson, 3:03.
160-Dane Myers (PC) forfeit.
170-Austin Farabaugh (PC) forfeit.
Analysis: Not much to analyze here. The Stoy name is a familiar one at Penn Cambria, and I wondered how Jarred would do this year. Drawing Stephen Rouser wasn't an easy assignment. I'm also interested in why Dominic Farabaugh wasn't in the lineup for Penn Cambria.

Bedford 45, Central Cambria 16
132-Ian Ostrowski, CC, maj. dec. Kyle Mehle, 13-5.
138-Will Hartman, BD, dec. Hunter Kish, 2-0.
145-Tommy Opdenhoff, CC, maj. dec. Kenny Collins, 10-0.
152-Uriah Costal, BD, dec. Wyatt Coposky, 5-2.
160-Ryan Wertz, BD, pinned Sean Snyder, 0:58.
170-Daniel Brett, BD, dec. Caliber Castel, 11-7.
182-Alex Croft, CC, dec. Ty Zimmerman, 14-7.
195-Braden Crawley, BD, pinned Nate Kaschalk, 0:22.
220-Jorge Canales, BD, pinned Tommy Howell, 1:53.
285-Nate Shoemaker, BD, pinned Aaron Averi, 1:24.
106-Nate Baughman, BD, forfeit.
113-No Match.
120-Max Murin, CC, tech fall Grant Browell, 2:40.
126-Jon Gabriel, BD, forfeit
Analysis: Matt Maisel covered this dual for The Tribune-Democrat. Bedford is always a strong dual-meet team because, in addition to the talent on usually on hand, the Bisons are good at getting the best matchups they need and avoiding pins. Limiting the Red Devils' big three of Max Murin, Ian Ostrowski and Tommy Opdenhoff to a combined 13 points was a win. Bedford also got victories from some of the newer names in their lineup, such as Ryan Wertz, Jorge Canales and Will Hartman. Considering that the dual meet was already decided by the final two bouts, it would have been nice to have seen Max Murin to bump up to 126 to face Jon Gabriel, although after wrestling 106 last season, that might have been an awfully big jump for him. Update: Maisel's story points out that Murin weighed in at 113 and bumped up to 120, so there is no way he could have gone up to wrestle 126.

Portage 48, Shade 15
106-No match.
113-No match.
120-Andrew Kolenovic, P, forfeit.
126-Jesse Husar, P, forfeit.
132-Alex Gageby, P, forfeit.
138-Caleb Lutz, P, pinned Nicholas Serrano, :21.
145-Bryan Husar, P, dec. Austin Lawson, 10-6.
152-Michael Manges, S, dec. Nick Lutz, 7-1.
160-Brady Ratosky, P, forfeit.
170-Marshall McCabe, P, forfeit.
182-Theodore Dunagan, S, forfeit.
195-Jordan Beyer, P, dec. Gregory Gill, 6-4.
220-Quentin Evans, P, forfeit.
285-Trevor Brown, S, forfeit.
Analysis: With only four bouts contested, there's not much to see here. Of those four matches, there were a couple of interesting things. First off Nick Lutz, who I had listed as a wrestler who didn't come out this year, was in the Portage lineup. He lost to Michael Manges 7-1 in a matchup of, arguably, the two most accomplished wrestlers on their respective teams.

Check back, as I'll add more results as I get them.
