WestPAC preview

Time: 9 a.m.
Location: Berlin Brothersvalley High School.
The field: Berlin Brothersvalley, Conemaugh Township, Meyersdale, North Star, Portage, Shade.
The format: Round robin.
Returning champions: Kyle Boyce, Berlin Brothersvalley (106); Aaron Griffith, Conemaugh Township (106); Joe Swank, Berlin Brothersvalley (126); Brady McKenzie, Meyersdale (138); Taylor Cahill, Berlin Brothersvalley (152); Bryce Fochtman, Berlin Brothersvalley (160); Dillion Charlton, North Star (170); Hunter Connor, North Star (182); Ty Smith, Meyersdale (220): Anthony Collins, Berlin Brothersvalley (285).
The favorite: There's no team race here, but Berlin Brothersvalley has five returning champions if Kyle Boyce is back in the lineup after not starting the season on the team. I don't expect Braden Fochtman, who has been the subject of much speculation and would give the Mountaineers a sixth returning champ, to compete.
Weight to watch: 170. With only six teams and the most of those with less than a full lineup, there's not much depth to the weight classes. This one isn't horribly deep either, but with returning champions in Taylor Cahill (152) and Dillion Charlton (170), it's as good as any. If Meyersdale's Chris Hutzell is back from a broken hand suffered in football season - I don't know the time table for him, but imagine that he would be eased back into the lineup rather than facing up to five matches in his first day back - it would be significantly more difficult.
Name to know: Keaton Furry, North Star. With so many returning champions, it's hard to find an unknown wrestler who could come out of nowhere to win a title. I'll go with the Cougars' freshman at 106.
Updates: I plan on attending and will provide updates when possible, assuming I can find a place to work and get online.

  1. Griffith is not a 106 pound westpac champ? The first was Tommy Dearmitt, then Trevor Thomas, then Boyce
