Thursday 2/9/2012 recap

The big news Thursday was the start of the PIAA Dual-Meet Championships in Hershey. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it this year, but I was able to get live results here. For those of you that tweet, Bedford's wrestling Twitter does an excellent job of giving live updates. There are tweets every few seconds, so it's almost like listening on the radio.
I used both resources as well as a phone interview with coach Brian Creps to help me write a story on Bedford's 42-27 victory over Western Wayne in the first round. The Bisons will be taking on Pen Argyl at noon Friday.
If you're looking for full box scores from all of the meets, the PIAA has those as well.

220 Matt Rosensweet (Western Wayne Hs) Dec Jacob Krupa (Bedford Hs) 4-2

132 Morgan Fuller (Western Wayne Hs) Dec Caleb Grimes (Bedford Hs) 7-2
138 Zach Dudek (Bedford Hs) Dec Manuel Mirailh (Western Wayne Hs) 12-6
145 Beau Fuller (Western Wayne Hs) Dec Jesse Martin (Bedford Hs) 7-1
152 Tanner Williams (Bedford Hs) Major Lucas Karnick (Western Wayne Hs) 13-3
160 Josiah Koontz (Bedford Hs) TF Brandon Hadden (Western Wayne Hs) 17-2
170 Garrett Enslin (Western Wayne Hs) Fall Cody Yingling (Bedford Hs) 2:27
182 Austin Swoyer (Western Wayne Hs) Fall Dylan Evans (Bedford Hs) 1:59

Analysis: Mike Brett's pin over Conner Rosensweet was huge. Rosensweet is one of Western Wayne's best wrestlers ans led Brett after one. Not only was it probably a nine-point swing from what the Wildcats were expecting, it also probably planted a lot of doubt in the first-time participants' minds about whether or not they belonged. Experienced Bedford had no such worries, even after falling behind 9-6 heading to the lightweights. Four consecutive pins by Jake Warren, Ryan Easter, Garrett Thomas and Toby Brett made it 30-9 and essentially ended Western Wayne's chances. Zach Dudek trailed early but came on strong to beat Manuel Mirailh at 138. Tanner Williams added some leg attacks to his always solid defense in a major decision of Lucas Karnick at 152 and Josiah Koontz battled through a possibly broken nose for a tech. fall at 160. Good start for Bedford, but the road will get much more difficult quickly.

Cambria Heights 54, Northern Cambria 9
120-Joe Davis, CH, forfeit.
126-Brad Thomas, CH, dec. Nolan Paronish, 11-3.
132-Jeff Brahim, CH, dec. Tyler Gaston, 8-5.
138-Gus Yahner, NC, pinned Raymond Niebauer, 1:00.
145-Casey Brown, NC, dec. Travis Yahner, 8-3.
152-Andy Hollern, CH, dec. John Krumenacker, 15-12.
160-Dalton Waksmunski, CH, pinned Cody Weisner, 2:36.
170-William Hoover, CH, forfeit.
182-Ross Inzana, CH, pinned Joey Frontino, 1:13.
195-Tyler Crawford, CH, forfeit.
220-Jacob Beach, CH, forfeit.
285-Dom Novella, CH, forfeit.
106-Mike Gautlick, CH, forfeit.
113-Ryan Dupas, CH, forfeit.

Analysis: Not too much too look at here, with seven forfeits. The biggest surprise I see is Brad Thomas' 11-3 major decision of Nolan Paronish at 126 pounds. Thomas has struggled at times this season, but now that he's down to 126, maybe bigger things are on the horizon for the 2011 regional qualifier.

United 57, Marion Center 9
106-No match.
113-Isaac Stewart, MC, dec. Seth Knapic, 7-3.
120-Warren Lowther, U, forfeit.
126-Brandon Heberling, MC, pinned Grant Ingalls.
132-Gaige George, U, forfeit.
138-Troy Matson, U, forfeit.
145-Tyler Mack, U, forfeit.
152-No match.
160-John Blankenship, U, dec. Phil Crook, 7-0.
170-Miles Stahl, U, forfeit.
182-Dillon Heming, MC, forfeit.
195-Tyler Oliver, U, forfeit.
220-Ron Snyder, U, forfeit.
285-Ben Mountan, U, pinned Austyn Polisky.

Analysis: Ugh. Only four matches, so it's not hard to pick the match of the night: John Blankenship's 7-0 victory over Phil Crook at 160. Blankenship improved to 26-0 with the victory over Crook, who is now 21-7, so it was a very good match in a dual that didn't have much of that. I'm still a little surprised that Blankenship dropped to 160. (I knew he was, but this was his first match there). He looked like a tank at 170. Can't imagine how he looks compared to other 160-pounders. Speaking of other 160-pounders how about this District 6 bracket - Forest Hills' Cody Law (No. 1 in Pennsylvania Wrestling Rankings), Central Cambria's Tony Risaliti (No. 2) and Blankenship (No. 6 at 170). Should be fun.

North Star HS: 63, SHADE HS: 9
113: MANGES, MIKE (SHADE HS) SV Gennett, Colton(North Star HS) 4-2
120: Roberts, Nick (North Star HS) FALL Reynolds, Jonathan(SHADE HS) :45
126: Mostoller, Tayte (North Star HS) For (SHADE HS) -
132: Mostoller, Tevin (North Star HS) For (SHADE HS) -
138: Lepley, Luke (North Star HS) FALL Kostick, James(SHADE HS) 4:50
145: Connor, Austin (North Star HS) FALL Hutzell, Adam(SHADE HS) 5:48
152: Otten, James (SHADE HS) FALL Revak, Tanner(North Star HS) 4:13
160: Shawley, Lance (North Star HS) For (SHADE HS) -
170: Yoder, Neil (North Star HS) DEC Orner, Mathew(SHADE HS) 9-2
182: Strasiser, Max (North Star HS) For (SHADE HS) -
195: Barley, Raymond (North Star HS) For (SHADE HS) -
220: Horner, Kevin (North Star HS) For (SHADE HS) -
285: Supanick, Shane (North Star HS) For (SHADE HS) -

Analysis: Another forfeit-fest. It's a shame to see that Shade, which had made so much progress with its start-up program in the past decade, had eight weight classes it couldn't fill. Not sure what happened to Joe Pakstis at 106 pounds. I know he had a knee injury earlier in the season. Hopefully it's nothing serious and he'll be back soon. The match of the night certainly would have been Wolf Otten's pin of Tanner Revak at 152 pounds. After an undefeated run through districts last season - including a title-winning victory over Revak - Otten has stepped up the competition this year. At 24-5, he seems better prepared for the postseason than he was last season.

Meyersdale 68, Frankfort (W.Va.) 6 - No report on this one, but the Daily American has a story and box on it, as Stephen McKenzie picked up his 100th career win.
