Wednesday Night Recap 2/1/2012

Three of the four matches in the District 6 Class AA Duals took place on Wednesday, with three of them in Class AA. Two of those went to the higher seeded teams. The lone exception was at Blairsville. I attended that match and my wife took photos, which you'll be able to see at www.tkophotos.shutterfly.com soon.

District 6 Class AA Duals
No. 1 Mount Union 48,  No. 8 Cambria Heights 22
152-Dylan Smith, MU, dec. Richard Legros, 6-0.
160-Cory Kylor, MU, maj. dec. Dalton Waksmunski, 14-3.
170-Ross Inzana, CH, pinned Jeremy Hess, 1:45.
182-Phil Kyle, MU, pinned Tyler Crawford, 1:20.
195: Jake Beach, CH, pinned Darrian Stapleton, 1:20.
220: Kai House, MU, dec. Aaron Gill, 5-3.
285: McKenon Burns, MU, pinned Dominic Novella, 3:43.
106: Sage Moist, MU, tech. fall Michael Dautlick, 18-2, 4:10.
113: Ryan Dupas, CH, maj. dec. Tyler Foor, 12-2.
120: Dylan Knable, MU, pinned Jeff Brahim, 0:57.
126: Brad Thomas, CH, pinned Curtis Jury, 0:47.
132: Kord Aurand, MU, pinned Raymond Niebauer, 0:57.
138: Tyler Long, MU, forfeit.
145: Derek Tress, MU, dec. Travis Yahner, 12-6

Analysis: Neither team was at its best because of injuries, but Mount Union is probably still the best team in the district even without Ryan Wilson, Cole Boozel and Nik Smith. Cambria Heights forfeited 138 pounds, which is where the injured Levi Niebauer likely would have been, but that as hardly the difference in the match. Mount Union got a boost at 285 pounds, as backup McKenon Burns pinned Dominic Novella. Phil Kyle's pin of Tyler Crawford also was big for the Trojans. Not a bad performance by Cambria Heights, but I still would have liked to have seen what Claysburg-Kimmel could have done in this spot. You can read about the match here.

No. 4 Huntingdon 51, No. 5 Richland 18
I don't have a box score available yet, but I do know that the only winners for Richland were John Rizzo (220 pounds) and Adam George (106), each of whom had pins, and Nick Naglic (132) and Dan Devan (152), each of whom had decisions. This wasn't much different than the Richland Coaches Duals, where the Bearcats beat the Rams 60-22.

No. 6 Juniata 44, No. 3 Blairsville 29
120-Jacob White, J, maj. dec. Pete Hipple, 14-6.
126-Derek Beitz, J, dec. Channing Cavender, 9-7.
132-Lucas Nanna, J, dec. Lucas Palmer, 8-2.
138-Noah Tarr, B, pinned Ty Treaster, :47.
145-Brandon Rowles, J, pinned Lucas Mowery, :33.
152-Zach Beitz, J, pinned Zach Pecze, :20.
160-Drew Doak, B, tech. fall Tyler Hershey, 20-4 (5:09).
170-Colton Shertzer, J, pinned Bobby Thompson, 1:43.
182-Scott Thompson, B, pinned William Giarratana, 1:10.
195-Alex Tripodis, B, pinned Chase Furry, 2:41.
220-Pat Fitzgerald, J, maj. dec. Luke White, 13-1.
285-Dylan Powell, J, pinned Ryan Maskerty, 1:40.
106-Logan Henry, B, pinned Cole Walters, :52.
113-Hunter Harris, J, pinned Nick Pecze, 1:45.

Analysis: As I said, I was at this one, and it ended up being a very quick moving match because only four of the 14 matches went the distance, and eight of the nine falls came in the first period. The biggest of those came at 170 pounds, where Colton Shertzer pinned Bobby Thompson. Shertzer, who was on a mission trip and missed much of the season, gave up a quick takedown and it looked like the Bobcats were on their way to a victory - possibly even bonus points - that could have gotten them within 5 points at 22-17. Instead, Thompson took a bad shot and Shertzer tossed to him his back and pinned him. The other key matches, as I saw it, came early in the dual. Jacob White was leading Pete Hipple 8-4 after two periods in the opener at 120, but turned on the pressure in the third on his way to a 14-6 major decisions. Derek Beitz trailed 7-5 after one period, but picked up a pair of backpoints in the second and a reversal in the third for a 9-7 victory over Channing Cavdender at 126. Luke Nanna scored 8 unanswered points in his 8-2 victory over Lucas Palmer to put the Bobcats up 10-0. The potential big matches didn't pan out. Brandon Rowles and Zach Beitz each weighed in at 145 pounds - meaning Noah Tarr didn't get a shot at either of them - and Drew Doak moved up to 160, meaning Blairsville's best missed out on two of Juniata's best.

120-Trevor Corl (BEL) dec. Brian Evans, 8-1

Regular Season
Westmont Hilltop 69, Northern Cambria 12
113-Logan Blackburn, WH, pinned Noah Tomallo, 2:38.
120-Stephen Zipf, WH, forfeit.
126-Nolan Paronish, NC, pinned Justin Mills, 1:15.
132-Andew Garrison, WH, pinned Tyler Gaston, 4:46.
138-Mike Walsh, WH, dec. Gus Yahner, 3-0.
145-Casey Brown, NC, forfeit.
152-Tanner Patton, WH, pinned John Krumenacker, 1:21.
160-Jonah Cramer, WH, forfeit.
170-Colin Barron, WH, forfeit.
182-Ryan Burnheimer, WH, pinned Joe Frontino, 1:02.
195-Eric Kowalewski, WH, forfeit.
220-Don Shovestull, WH, forfeit.
285-Josh Duplin, WH, forfeit.
106-Drake Dorian, WH, forfeit.

Analysis: Eight forfeits in this one mean that as much as Westmont Hilltop coach Matt Beaujon wanted his wrestlers to get back on the mat quickly after Tuesday night's victory over Bald Eagle Area, half of them didn't get that opportunity. Northern Cambria didn't have much luck, either. Even with only seven wrestlers in the lineup, the Colts still managed to hit three of the Hilltoppers' better guys in Logan Blackburn (113),  Tanner Patton (152) and Ryan Burnheimer (182). It looks like Gus Yahner gave Mike Walsh a match at 138 and Nolan Paronish recorded the Colts' only victory on the mat. Not sure why Westmont forfeited 145.
